Hi all, I'm now going through my first treatment for Follicular Lymphoma, ritiximab plus bendamustine. The actual treatment was fine, and I had no side effects at all for three days, but then felt very sick, was sick, and although I got over it by taking the anti sickness tablets they make me totally constipated! Is it ok to drink fruit smoothies? I normally drank them on a daily basis until I started treatment but as they are said to boost the immune system against 'nasties' I don't want to risk stopping the chemo from working. Also, I used to take a daily mumtivitaimin pill, plus a fish oil for my aged joints, and sometimes a top up slow release vitamin C if I felt I'd been around ill people, is it ok to still take those? On the plus side, my visible lumps have gone down already and I've only had the first cycle, 2 more to go - covid permitting!
Thank you in advance for help and advice
Rose
Hi Rose and welcome to the site, good to see the treatment is making a difference, many find this happens, re your questions best to ask your specialist nurse especially about any supplements or vitamin tablets as some do work against the chemo and they know which to avoid. I would think the smoothies should be ok so long as you was the fruit and or peel it, as the worry is that you pick up an infection and as we know bugs can lurk anywhere.
Good luck with the next 2 treatments and try to keep on top of the sickness and sadly most of us suffer with constipation during treatment, during lots, try to exercise daily and get lots of fibre to help, some recommend prune juice, hopefully you will find something that works for you.

Hi Rose 321 and a second welcome to this corner of the community and good to hear that your treatment is doing some good but unfortunately there are side effects at times.
Some great advise from John and yes, these questions should be put to your clinical team as not every case is the same - even with the same type of FL and as John says you don't want to work against the good that your treatment is doing.
This LINK about side effects good information source, its from the Lymphoma Action website. Lymphoma Action is a small but very active UK Lymphoma Specific Charity who have lots of good information, videos and run regular regional online Lymphoma support groups and indeed a very great Lymphoma Buddy Service.

Rose, when I went through treatment back in 2009, I used this site and the lymphoma action site and talked to others like you are who had been through treatment or like me were going through it at the time. Its reassuring to know what we experience during treatment is normal, because others had similar experiences. However I always check with my team what I could and could not do and shared my experiences so they knew how I was responding to treatment as they were the only ones who had the full picture and could give the information I needed at times. To help, I used to keep a daily diary and in it wrote down all the questions I had for the next time I saw my consultant or nurse, needless to say my consultations were not the quick 5 minutes others had. I had a great consultant who took the time to give me the time I needed to understand and sometimes that meant playing 20 questions, as I would medical speak was a different language you lear quickly.
Good luck with the remaining treatments, they will be over before you know it.

Billiant thak you, I will check that out as soon as my main computer is charged. Useless try to read anything on the phone screen!
That same treatment made me really sick too. It's usually well tolerated but not for me, or you. I got them to change the sickness drugs to something that worked better and the alternative didn't cause constipation which was a bonus. The fruit smoothies should help with that until then.
Yes I will certainly ask to have different sickness pills. They work fine for me but I have to stop taking them so that I can do the other thing! Getting better with time and thankfully the lumps are shrinking visibly which is encouraging. I'm only a lightweight, normally take the childrens dosage of pills etc., so I might try cutting the sickness pills in half and trying that! Thanks for your helpful commonets
