Hello, like many others here have said, getting diagnosed with eye cancer was weird. I was very calm about it. I did a lot of research in the month between urgent referrals and knew what kind of options were likely. I think my positive head had convinced myself it would be benign, or I had failed to absorb the liver connection because that was too scary to contemplate.

It was the day after when I found myself unable to talk and deeply distressed. My husband and I went to Maggie’s and he had to talk for me, which is not a normal state! I am not sure how things would have gone if Maggie’s hadn’t been there. Within a few days things had improved and while this is a rollercoaster of a diagnosis (not so bad, shit really bad, quite small really, shit does that even matter, reassuring to have time off to get fit, shit scans for the rest of my life). I dissolve in to tears if anyone mentions the children. I’m “fine” now, a lot more accepting of that rollercoaster and the uncertainty we all have in our lives whether we have a “big beastie” (as someone here called it, brilliant!) or not.

i had markers put in last week and will be going to clatterbridge for a mask fitting on june 11 then proton beam treatment june 30. Anyone else?

Post op my eye recovered well but a week in I am squinting at things and wondering “what is normal” so about to do some searching on this forum. Thank you.

  • Hi Joe.

Taking your post as a whole I think the best answer to "what is normal?" is actually "All you have written, and new yet to come, is YOUR new normal". It's a bit of a shifting sands thing for the next few months as you learn more and fit it in with your life

Some of your experience is of course common with others in general terms, but quite how your own eye will react specifically to surgery is going to be as variable as people are. It will take a couple of months for your eye to come to a stablish (it will settle more, but it's finer tuning) post op point so what I would suggest is note what's different, keep noting if it improves and noting other things as matters settle. But always ask a question.

Presently at +8 months, I find I have to concentrate more to focus when I'm checking traffic on my treated side when driving (making turns and such). I'm trying to view it as "retraining" my eye because of the differences. It's an annoyance for now but it will become trained/familiar.

I also now have a "ridge" running around part of my iris in the white of my eye that wasn't present pre op for example. Question raised at a check up, not an issue.

Would like to say reading between the lines you look to have a good grip on your situation and some great support in place. But that said, you're right that it's a rollercoaster. Not all days are high days but then we're they ever? This section of life's rollercoaster has its own highs and lows, but life in general means experience you can call on

Clatterbridge are good people, and seemed to appreciate the extra biscuits left at the end of the week! There is a WRVS café there too which is always good for a post session "reset" before carrying on with the day. A coffee and biccie works nicely. (In my case)

Good luck with the mask work and PBT.

Here's hoping to see posts from you in future.
