Duodenal Adenocarcinoma Stage 3/4 Help

Hi,

I'm new here but looking for some support/hope/guidance

My dad was diagnosed with duodenal adenocarcinoma a couple of weeks ago, his first oncology appointment was last week and we have come away feeling quite deflated

I’ll explain what we know so far - he had a resection done in January 2026. After surgery the pathology confirmed cancer they told us it was a T4 tumour and there was residual disease remaining so the resection was classed as an R2 resection. The residual disease is on his aorta and ureta and they classed this as inoperable due to high surgical risk

Cut to now where his oncologist had advised this is incurable and ultimately the chemo is palliative to extend the time he does have remaining and quality of life - this hit like a ton of bricks

We were also told no lymph nodes were removed during surgery but oncologist is going under the assumption they are involved due to spread to back of abdominal wall but again it feels like “what ifs” like things aren’t being checked thoroughly enough for something so complex and serious

I feel no hope has been given and I’m not willing to accept it that easily - has anyone had a similar diagnosis and prognosis and either surpassed expectations or found an alternative solution?
We are going to Christie’s in Manchester to get a private second opinion.

Thank you in advance!

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I’m Anne, one of the Community Champions here on the Online Community and, although I'm not a member of this group, I noticed that your post hadn't had any replies yet. Responding to you will 'bump' it back to the top of the discussion list again.

While you're waiting for replies, it would be great if you could put something about your dad's diagnosis and treatment into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
