I am 62, I was diagnosed with CLL 4 years ago, I have been in remission for 2 years, I have started a new drug Zanubrutinib, after an older version gave me bad reaction. The new version has given me a new life my lymph nodes have gone down. I am feeling a lot better within my self. I have been married for 35 years, when I was diagnosed with cancer my wife did not expect me to live for so long. Our relationship has hit rock bottom. My cancer nurse told me that because of the type of chemo drug I need to practice safe sex. My wife was not very happy to use protection as we haven't for so many years.I am human & need emotional & sexual contact to feel normal. My wife has made me feel that "no women wants a man with cancer". I have been feeling down about my wife's rejection I am still me. I cannot help I got cancer, if it was the other way around I would have loved her more & given her more affection. I think me & my wife will separate at some point. I need to move on & think about the rest of mu life.
Several friends have made comments about how they would not date someone with cancer almost cringing about the idea. I am just so surprised at there reactions. I need a partner who cares, how can I date with cancer, is there specialist websites or forums.
Hi Swordsman and a warm welcome to this corner of the Community although I am sorry to see folks joining us and sorry to hear about the challenges you are dealing with. This is something that I have not had to navigate but let’s see if any group member picked up in your post.
I don’t have Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) but help out around our blood cancer groups.
As for information or websites you may want to call the Macmillan Support Line is open between 8am-8pm (timings may differ across services) 7 days a week on 0808 808 00 00…… this service provides cancer information, practical information, emotional support or just a listening ear.
Talking to people ‘face to face’ can be very helpful so do check to see if you have any Local Macmillan Support in your area, do also check for a local Maggie's Centre as these folks are amazing and cover all aspects of the cancer journey.
Although CLL it has the word Leukaemia in it, in Heamatology terms it actually comes under the umbrella of Low-grade non-Hodgkin lymphoma - yes very confusing I hear you say. This is why CLL, SLL and HCL have a group on their own.
Do check out Lymphoma Action. Lymphoma Action is the only UK Lymphoma Specific Charity who have lots of good reliable information, videos…… basically all things relating to your condition....... pre, during and post treatment..
Lymphoma Action run regular Support Platforms...... I highly recommend these groups as there is nothing better than talking with others who have walked the journey.
They also have a great Lymphoma Action Buddy Service where you can be linked up with someone who has walked the same treatment journey.
They also have a helpline on 0808 808 5555 where the team will be on hand to give you some support - open every week day from 10 till 3.
I am always around to help more, just to chat and to answer questions.
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
We’re here to provide physical, financial and emotional support.
