I have had a winter virus two years in a row.
Symptoms
Could hardly lift head off the pillow for 36 hours
Oscillating temperatures initially
Zero appetite for 4 weeks
No cough
Negative covid test
General fatigue for 4 - 6 weeks

Could this be related to my Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) or is it likely to be independent of it?

  • Hi  this most likely is related to your CLL.

From my 23+ years living with my CTCL I have had many many winter viruses with none, some or most of the symptoms you have listed.

I was told way back at the start that most of these viruses a healthy immune system would deal with, with some side effects......... but when your immune system is fighting on two fronts all year these viruses will slip through and are often more severe than in a person who has no cancer.

Our immune system is fighting the progression of our cancers 24/7 all year so it is simple (especially during the winter) for viruses to get through our bodies immune defences.

I am over 7 years out from my last treatment and have had two bad-ish viruses this winter alone.

  • Hi, sorry to hear you have been ill.

    A few comments.

The lateral flow test is not 100% reliable and quite a few people have COVID, but this test does not show it.

The PCR test is more reliable.

Fatigue is a very common symptom of CLL and, if severe, can be one reason for any treatment.

Since you write that the fatigue lasted 4 - 6 weeks, perhaps not due to the CLL.

In general I would say that the symptoms you write about are not then CLL related.

    THE REALLY GOD NEWS..

Treatments for our CLL are now well tolerated and are easy to take pills, and these are the pills available.

Venetoclax, Ibrutinib Acalabrutinib, Zanubrutinib, and shortly to be available Pirtobrutinib..!!

I am on Acalabrutinib and just for the first few weeks some mild reactions to the pills, now I have no side effects and the CLL is nearly gone.

Good luck with your treatment when it become due, if ever..

Watch and wait for 17 years and now on Acalabrutinib.
