Awaiting MRI

Hi to all you legendary women!

I’ve just received my diagnosis. The current plan is for a radical hysterectomy. I was told my MRI would be within days then had the appointment through today for 2 weeks time. No idea how I’ll manage that wait. Is this normal?

  • Hi  and welcome to our group.

I’m sorry you’ve had this diagnosis, but if you are able to have a radical hysterectomy then that would mean it’s a lower stage of cancer-though any diagnosis is horrible and scary.

Your timescale for getting an mri scan is very normal-we all expect things to happen immediately but unfortunately that’s not how it works in reality. Waiting is a huge part of the diagnostic process for us all, and it’s one of the worst parts of this whole thing-waiting for scans, results and treatment or surgery to happen.

The only thing you can do is try to keep yourself as busy and as distracted as possible while you wait, and there will be a wait after the scan to get the results too. Let us know how you get on, and if you’re having surgery, there are lots of other ladies in the group who have been through this who will be able to help support you through. Feel free to ask any questions or share any worries as you think of them.

  • Hi Sarah,

Thank you for taking the time to reply. I’m just learning that in many ways I’m lucky to have the choice of surgery, kind of a best case in a crappy situation.

It helps to know the wait time is fairly standard too, I was just thrown by the consultant telling me it would be within the week.

I’m fairly chilled at the moment although I realise there’s a journey ahead which is different for everyone of course.

This group and people like you are helping hugely though so again…. Thank you Relaxed️ x

  • Hi again

I think any treatment is a big deal, whether surgery or chemoradiation. I remember being very disappointed that I couldn’t have surgery at the time of my diagnosis after being told that it would be the plan for me, but had to just move forward with the treatment that was best for my situation.

It’s really not common to have scans within days though it depends on the hospital and how busy the departments are. Over the years I’ve had to wait varying amounts of time for scans and results, and it’s never easy.

Hopefully the mri will confirm that surgery will be still be possible and you won’t be waiting too long for a date.

  • Thanks Sarah, sounds like you’ve been on quite a journey yourself. I do hope you are taking good care.

Of course I agree that every treatment is a big deal. I guess I’m in the early stages of navigating it all so I hope to keep learning as I go.

Whilst my anxiety has increased tenfold after reading that, I guess that’s all part of the process.

    Thanks again Sarah xx
