Hi I have been told I have cin 1. I had a biopsy and the letter says to be repeated in 3yr. How? I thought it was 6month to 1yr not the usual 3yr. Anything could happen in this time. I rang the doctors and they did not help at all. Any info would be good thank you

  • Hi  and welcome to our group.

CIN1 is the lowest level of abnormal cells and usually doesn’t require any treatment, as it can often regress on its own as the body deals with the hpv virus. I’ve put a link here to the government website which sets out the protocol for dealing with monitoring CIN and it does describe the folllow up process, but this refers to the need for follow up AFTER treatment has been carried out, which would be 6 months as you say. A diagnosis of CIN1 where no treatment has been carried out usually means going back to the normal screening programme as you have been, as this level of monitoring is seen as sufficient.

I can understand why your gp surgery was not able to help as they do not send out cervical screening letters-this is done by the national screening service. You can only have a cervical screening test done when you are called for one, so the gp cannot do one outside this timescale. If you did have a test done by the gp outside the scheduled timing it would unfortunately be disregarded and not tested,

I appreciate you are concerned about having any diagnosis of abnormal cells, but the correct protocol seems to have been followed in your case. If you’d like to speak to a nurse about this, the MacMillan Support Line number is in my signature, or you can ask a question here
