Referred back to hospital again

Hi all

Just over a year ago I posted on here after a 2 week pathway referral and here I am back again....

Bit of background on me!  Persistent hpv, yearly smears all up to date.  2023 - hpv and cin1 at colposcopy with bunch biopsies which came back no cancer detected and cin1 was left to see if it reverts to normal.  2024 (just last month) hpv still but cytology negative for abnormalities.

This weekend have had some very light pink discharge on and off.  Went to gp yesterday who looked at cervix and said looked possibly ectopic and she could see a vessel?  Asked her to clarify this and she said it was a blood vessel on my cervix?

She has referred me back on the 2 week pathway in view of my persistent hpv and previous cin (I had cin3 25 years ago which I had loop treatment done on).

My mind is now in all sorts of dark places, thinking the worst and wondering if my smear cytology results have been incorrect.

Just wondering if anyone has had similar experience?

  • Hi  and welcome back to the group.

I don’t actually have the same experience to share I’m afraid as I went straight to a cancer diagnosis but I wanted to say hello anyway. There will be other ladies who may come along to post who have been through this however.

It’s too early to try and guess what might be going on, but an ectropian, which is not cancer, can cause bleeding. I haven’t noticed anyone else post about there being a blood vessel on their cervix, but you will get a close examination when you go the hospital and hopefully get some reassurance.

It is possible for things to be missed, but again it’s impossible to know yet if your results will differ when you have further testing. However, thinking the worst at this point will not be helping you and just make you even more anxious.

I hope you don’t have too long to wait for your appointment, but in the meantime I’d recommend resisting the urge to look for answers on dr Google as it cannot diagnose you. Sit tight, and hopefully all will be well but there will be support for you in the group if you get a cancer diagnosis. Hopefully, that won’t happen though!

  • Hello SarahH21!

Thank you so much for replying and I know you are right!

I have been reading through some of the threads, stories and experiences on here (including yours!) and it does fill me with hope seeing how all you incredibly resilient ladies deal with this shitty card you have been dealt.

I will stay put and keep you posted - hopefully not too much of a wait till I get my appointment

Love to all in the meantime xx

  • I’m glad you’ll let us know your outcome-many ladies don’t come back and post (perhaps because they have no further concerns) but it’s useful for others to read experiences. Mine was unusual, but not unheard of, but I hope that reading real experiences doesn’t frighten you when you don’t have a cancer diagnosis yourself.

  • Just a little update.

Have been to rapid access clinic this morning and consultant said she could see a 'friable' area on the cervix so has taken a punch biopsy.  She didn't think it looked 'sinister' but biopsy to be on safe side with results in around 2 weeks.

I just keep thinking how can a smear be so wrong when my result only last month were cytology negative?  I know they aren't 100% but I just feel like my results over the last 2 years haven't been.

I have to contact hospital direct if more spotting episodes too for further investigation.  I just feel like I am constantly going to be on high alert now every time I go to the loo.

Is there anything positive to take from this???

  • Hi

I think you’ve answered your own question there-no testing is always 100% accurate unfortunately. I think the positive to take from this is that the consultant hasn’t seen anything she feels is sinister.

It’s just being thorough to take a biopsy, and hopefully your results will be fine, but hope you’ll let us know.
