A bit concerned!

Hi everyone, I'm happy to find a support forum. I had abnormal results from a recent pap smear, and am now scheduled for a leep biopsy on aug 19th. My pap smear results showed severe dysplasia/ squamous. Whatever that means I don't know. Can you tell me does a leep biopsy hurt? I'm scared about this upcoming test. I have the mindset that if this is cervical cancer, then it is what it is, and I will deal with it !

  • Hi  and welcome to our group.

I do hope you’ll find the group helpful and supportive for you. The results you had from your smear mean that some abnormal cells have been found-that is what severe dysplasia means. It’s not cancer, but if the abnormal cells are at a severe level, they should be removed, which is done by the LEEP procedure.

I can’t tell you if this hurts or not, as I haven’t had this procedure myself (I went straight to a cancer diagnosis unfortunately, so missed out treating the abnormal cells stage!). Hopefully some of the other ladies in the group would be able to share their experiences and be able to reassure you.

It’s  natural to be worried about any test like this, but hopefully it will go smoothly for you. The vast majority of ladies don’t need any further treatment after this so try to bear that in mind and not let your mind go to a cancer diagnosis at this stage.

  • Thank you so much for your rapid response!

  • I had lletz last month and it was fine.  I didn’t feel anything as had 2 local anaesthetics.  It did make my leg shake though!

I had 2 nurses present who were both very kind and reassuring throughout.

  • Good to hear. I found out today my pap smear came up negative for hpv. So that makes me thinking this is cervical cancer.
