Hi
Just been diagnosed, consultant believes 2B from examination, have had MRI and await biopsy results..was told surgery or radiation treatment and wondered why surgery only if earlier stage?I would appreciate any advice:)
Thanks
Hi Keyowni and welcome to our group.
I’m sorry to read you’ve had a cervical cancer diagnosis -I was stage 2b at my original diagnosis so went through chemoradiation.
Surgery is only normally carried out at Stage 1 or at the most Stage 2a. Otherwise the treatment will be chemotherapy and radiation in some combination. This is because surgery at a more advanced stage risks spreading the cancer further, Radiotherapy can be a very effective treatment for cervical cancer, combined with chemotherapy, and so that is the standard treatment at stage 2b and above.
Once your staging is established you’ll get your treatment plan and lots of us in the group have been through treatment so can offer you support. Please feel free to keep in touch and ask any questions as you go along. It can be a very difficult time waiting for your staging and plan, so we understand how stressful that is.

Hi Keyowni
Yes, the results are normally taken to a multi disciplinary team meeting where the different people involved in your care will decide on the next steps. At least you don’t have too long to wait for your appointment, and then you will know exactly what you are dealing with.
Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on.
