Hello,

I've just been diagnosed with Cervical cancer following a late smear test (due to pregnancy and surgery down there). I dont yet know what stage it's at and I'm waiting for an MRI, CT scan etc before they can assess and treat.

I am absolutely petrified. My mum died of lung cancer 5 days before my first and only son was born in 2020 and my mother in law died if bowel cancer in 2014. Both experiences were horrific and my brain naturally jumps to the worst possible conclusion.

  • Hi  and welcome to the group

You are currently at one of the most difficult stages of this process, where you have been told you have cancer but are still waiting for further tests to establish exactly what you’re dealing with.

Things will become easier to handle once your scans are completed and you know what the treatment plan will be. it’s natural to be afraid when we are told we have cancer, but try not to let your thoughts run away with themselves at this stage before you know anything. I appreciate you have had some horrible family experiences of cancer, as I did myself, but your cancer is a different type and you are a unique individual so there is no reason to assume your outcome will be the same as anyone else’s.

The treatment for cervical cancer can be very intense, but offers a very good success rate and once the stage is established, that will determine what treatment you will have. The treatment is fairly standard for each stage, following international guidelines and protocols so establishing the stage first is very important.

If it is early stage, you may have surgery in the form of a hysterectomy, and if it is a later stage the treatment would typically be chemo and radiotherapy over a 5-6 week period. We have ladies in the group who have gone through the hysterectomy and others who have done the chemorads.

I hope you’ll find the group a supportive and encouraging environment where you can ask any questions and discuss any fears and worries. Those of us who have been through this will be happy to help and encourage you through everything and give advice based on our own experiences.

Please keep in touch and let us know how things are going and we’ll be here for you.

  • Hi CJ86

I was you last year (August) and I remember how scared I felt and finding this group helped me so much.

I am one of the hysterectomy girls and so if you get told this treatment I will answer any questions you have about it all.

Try not to worry to much which I know is hard Heart️ just try to think well I have this and so now I need to fight it. MRI I had within a week and told within days of results coming through (afew days) which stage it was and then plan of how we was going to fight it.

Please as Sarah said use us to talk to, post how you feel as it helps and then you can feel the support you need.

  • Thank you both.

I've now got my CT scan and MRI booked in for a few days time and in a week I've got an examination. Hopefully in a few weeks I'll know what stage I'm at and what treatment.

I dont know if it's the right thing to do but I stopped taking the birth control pill today and I swear I had no symptoms before but now I feel pain in that region and feel sick. I'm guessing its probably the anxiety though so I'm trying to make myself relax.

  • So things are moving forward-that’s the main thing. Hopefully you won’t have too long to wait for all the results to be collated and a treatment plan established.

The mind is a powerful thing, and anxiety can magnify every little thing when you’re in this limbo situation of waiting to hear more.

Try your best not to worry to much-I know it’s difficult but it won’t change anything and you need to try and be in the best possible position to deal with whatever is coming.
