Hi all,

Feeling really anxious . I'm 45 andbI've had heavy bleeding problems for a while now longer periods and really heavy clotting and lower back pain. I recently bled for 3 weeks straight. I spot between periods.   Pinkish discharge. Then noticed 2 lumps in my groin one each side and a lump in my tummy. I examined down there and I'm discoloured. Reddish/ black areas also vulvar area completely different with growths. Looked up pictures online and wish I hadn't.

3x members of my immediate family have cancer. So we have a history. I've spoken to the doctor and he's ordered an urgent ultrasound and bloods. Found out my bloods are this Friday but my ultrasound is 12 days away.  I'm really struggling it really plays games with your head doesn't it?? I feel like I might combust. I keep feeling the lumps and checking myself. I feel like a mad women.

Sorry just needed to get it out. I just feel I have so many symptoms that it's so hard not to feel like it's so text to gynaecological cancers.

  • Hi and welcome to the group!

I can see why you’re worried and it sounds like you’ve got a lot of different things going on. One thing I would recommend is not to go on Google looking for things, as it will only scare you and cause anxiety and it cannot tell you what’s wrong. Especially don’t look for pictures to try and match what you’ve seen to what you think you have. And try not to obsessively check yourself, as poking around can make things worse and more tender.

Did you just have a phone appointment with the doctor or did you actually have a face to face appointment? I’m presuming at this stage you haven’t had a physical examination?

It sounds like your doctor is doing different tests to rule out things and get to the bottom of what’s wrong, and I see you’ve joined a few groups in the community which will hopefully be helpful for you.

To be honest, it doesn’t sound like cervical cancer from what you’ve said, although I appreciate you’ve had bleeding problems which can be a symptom. However, ultrasounds and blood tests are not typically used in diagnosing cervical cancer, so the doctor is starting off with general tests, and will then be able to move on from there. We all know how hard it is to wait for tests, but that’s actually not a long wait for the ultrasound.

The ultrasound will be able to look at your pelvic area in general to see what’s going on, and the blood tests will be able to check on your general state of health and see if there are any clues there. It will depend on which specific blood tests they are running to see what they are looking to identify or rule out.

All you can do meantime is sit tight and try not to let your mind run away with itself, imagining worst case scenarios before you know any details. It’s a scary time though and I think we all understand how difficult it is with the not knowing.

Please do stick with us and let us know how you’re getting on. We have a lovely group of supportive women here and we will help as much as we can based on our own experiences. If you need to vent or release worries, please feel free to do that, and we’ll be here to support you.

  • Thank you Sarah for replying,

Yes the doctor said  he wanted an urgent scan and the hospital said that's the first free one they have.  I think what made it worse was seeing the changes not just feeling them if that makes sense.

I know your right. It's so hard to focus on anything else. I will have to be patient I know. Thank you xx

  • Try to stop looking, though I know it’s tough if you’ve seen changes. The thing is, the situation is unlikely to change between now and your scan date. You are just at a really difficult part of the process just now, and things honestly do become easier once you know what you’re dealing with and get a plan of action to tackle it.

Try to keep yourself busy and distracted if you can-even just binge watching a series on the tv can help take your mind off things for a bit.

  • Thank you, can I ask one more thing Sarah please? What happens if I end up bleeding on the day of Theo ultra sound would it not go ahead? It's so hard to know when I will or won't bleed. Be so frustrating if bleeding postponed it xx

  • I think in the first place it would depend on the type of ultrasound being done-do you know if it’s a trans vaginal one, which goes up inside, or an abdominal one which is run over your tummy on the outside? Sometimes the issue with bleeding can be that the person cannot get the clear view that they need.

Hopefully there will no bleeding on the day, but if you are bleeding that day I’d call up just to check that it can still go ahead.

  • It's internally, it's a trans one yes. If be gutted if I was bleeding I'm due on again soon. But I can bleed for weeks then stop. There's no rhyme or reason to it at all at the moment so hard to plan. Thank you again for all your help.

I'm sure ill be back after the procedure with questions

    Thank you xx

  • It definitely makes planning things a challenge and it’s so frustrating. I had post menopausal bleeding which led to my diagnosis, but had no idea when it was going to happen or stop.

Definitely keep posting within the community here-it can be good to let things out to strangers who are not emotionally involved like family and you can feel free to say what you need to say.

  • Hi Sarah,

Sorry me again!! Firstly I hope your well, I had my scan bought forward and had it on Saturday 30th. I've been booked in for a phone call from the doctor's tomorrow to discuss the results. Do you think it's a positive as it's a phone call and not an actual  go appointment if you know what I mean?

    Thanks in advance

  • Hi Georgina

Don’t apologise! It’s actually hard to tell these days whether a phone call is “more positive” than a face to face appointment as they are using phone appointments more often now. I always had face to face for good or bad news, but of course that was before covid.

Anyway, it’s good you’ve had your scan, that’s something else ticked off the list of things to be done. So it could be to say that everything is fine, or it could be to say that you need some more tests or referral to a specialist. I would honestly expect you to see a gynaecologist at some point for a physical examination, given the different symptoms you’ve been experiencing.

Is this your gp who will be calling you? I hope it goes well, but please let us know how you get on. Good luck!
