Hello,
Just looking for some sort of advice or support from other that have been through this. I had a smear in May 2021 that showed I have HPV but no cancerous cells went back for my annual smear yesterday and the Nurse could see what looks like a Polyp (quite large) she called the doctor in who had a second look and said she’d send off for an urgent referral. I got a phone call from the hospital this morning Friday 20th May to say I’ve got an appointment on Monday. I suffer with health anxiety and have two young children and I’m pretty terrified right now!
Hello linds66 and welcome to the group.
Polyps are usually benign, but the referral is a good thing so that the experts can check it out. A quick appointment will be good for you in that it gives you less time left worrying about it.
You may have a biopsy taken so the cells can be checked just to make sure it’s a polyp. I haven’t experienced one, but a close friend had quite a large one which was removed under anaesthetic as a hospital day case. It was benign and she needed no other treatment.
I understand it will be worrying, but try to keep busy and distract yourself so as not to let your anxiety get on top of you. I hope everything turns out well on Monday for you, but please do feel free to post and let us know how you get on.

All the best for your appointment!

Hi Sarah, I went for my appointment on Monday. The Gynocologist was very good and calming. She confirmed a Polyp but couldn’t remove it as she couldn’t see the end of it. She said my cervix looked good and the Polyp doesn’t look untoward. I’ve started to get pains in my hips! I think it may be due to my work (floristry) I also suffer with sciatica. I’ve been referred for a colposcopy to remove it and they’ll also ultra sound me with me having the HPV. She did put my mind at ease a little even though I’ve not got to the bottom of it.
Hi linds
That all sounds quite straightforward for you thankfully. If it’s to be removed at a colposcopy, I’m assuming that it must not be too big then? The ultrasound will just check there are no more. I’m glad the gynaecologist has put your mind at rest and said nothing looks unusual so it’s all sounding good for you!

Hi Sarah,
she said it’s around 1cms in her sun up notes. If it can’t be done during the colposcopy then she will do a Hystecopy. (Sure I’ve spelt that incorrectly)! Yes, she said she’s very honest and would’ve said if it looked untoward. My Mum had a Polyp which she eventually had removed and then went on to have a Hysterectomy because of Ovarian Cysts.
Yes, polyps can be annoying but at least they can be whipped out! I’m thinking she might mean a hysteroscopy? That’s just an examination of your womb with a tiny camera and sometimes they will use this procedure just to see exactly where the polyp is to be sure of getting it out fully. Nothing to worry about though. Sounds like you have a nice gynaecologist which is also a bonus!

Hi linds
They’ll be different departments so I’d expect that’s why. I’ve never had two appointments for different things happen at the same time, although it would have been much more convenient that way!
