Hi
I’m worried sick as I have bleeding after sex, very painful sex, bleeding between periods, a constant pelvic pressure feeling ( also weeing more than usual and I feel an urgency to empty my bowels which is happening 5/6 times daily , although I’m not sure these two are related)
my smears have always been normal
I had a sti check which was all clear
my gp referred me three months ago to have a colposcopy
ive waited and waited and now contacted my gps and have been told there was an error and the referral wasn’t send,it has now but it’s an 8 week wait.
im driving myself crazy thinking everything’s pointing to cancer
is there a possibility I could even though I have had a clear smear?
Also has anyone else suffered with bowel or urine frequency changes before been diagnosed?
Thankyou!
Hi and welcome to the online community
It certainly sounds like you've been through a lot over these last few months and it must have been devastating to find out that because of an error made by your GP's practice the request for a colposcopy wasn't sent.
It's natural to assume the worst and I wondered if it was the GP who suggested that your symptoms could point to cancer of if you've been researching on the internet? The internet is a fantastic tool but type in any selection of symptoms and it will always list cancer as a possibility.
The reason I ask is that normally if a GP suspects cancer then there are very firm guidelines which they have to follow meaning you would be seen within 2 weeks. As your GP has told you it will be 8 weeks this suggests they've referred you as non-urgent, ie when cancer is not suspected.
While you're waiting for your appointment try to immerse yourself in things that you enjoy, not so easy during lockdown I know, so that you have less time to spend worrying about something that you can't control. Some people find mindfulness really useful and if this is something that might interest you clicking here will take you to the NHS page on mental health which includes links to mindfulness apps, some of which are free.
You might also find this article on how to ease worry when waiting for medical tests helpful to have a look through but if you feel that your anxiety is getting worse then do have a chat with your GP who should be able to recommend ways to ease the anxiety.
Do come back and let us know when you've got the results of your tests and I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that it's not cancer
