Hi, I'm new, not really sure where to post this so if it's in the wrong place I do apologise.
I have been having worrying symptoms for 6 months now, these include irregular bleeding, where I'm having very heavy periods, my heaviest has leaked through 3 heavy flow tampons per hour, long periods, my longest being 14 days. I spot in between periods, it's been pink, bright red, and brown Ive had it all. And my periods are coming 2 weeks apart, not one is the same, one could be 4 days, another could be 10 and another could be 14 so I never know what I'm getting. I have had poly cystic ovaries for years and I always struggled to even have a period, I'd probably get about 6 periods a year, so this change is drastic to me.
I've had pain during intercorse a few times, not all the time, I always bleed after too. I get lower pelvic dull aches, lower back cramps and then this pain that goes up my left side.. It has woke me out of a sleep a few times.
I have been to see my gp and she took some bloods, which all came back fine and she did a smear which has came back normal. I just don't know where I stand now. I know something is wrong, I'm still very worried. She has referred me to gyne but has said it could be over 6 months wait. I can do another 6 months of this.
Am I over reacting? Can you have cervical cancer and have a normal smear? I've been told that smears don't detect cancer and are used to detect changes and or hpv? This is on my mind all day every day.
Hi, Phoebe
I'm almost at the end of a long road of treatments. I had smears EVERY year for 20 years following a cone biopsy to remove abnormal cells on the cervix and yet, my cervical cancer was NOT diagnosed as it is a rare form which is not linked to HPV. It was found after my GP torpedoed me to "fast track" in April 2019 and they did a biopsy. It was very advanced already and had spread.
All I had was a tiny bit of spotting. I was lucky with my GP (who didn't even know me - it's one of those surgeries where you NEVER see the same person).
If I were you, I would look at having a biopsy done privately if months go by without any luck from your GP. I have been with NHS throughout and have ZERO complaints but I have talked to many people in waiting rooms and some people only got diagnosed after going private with the initial check (one chap the other day was refused an MRI by his GP although he felt and knew something was wrong with his eye / head - he was subsequently diagnosed with a brain tumour: he then presented this to his GP and is being treated by the NHS). Sometimes the most important thing is to get peace of mind / get a diagnosis.
The first Google yielded this:

Good luck and best wishes
Hi Penny Feather
Sorry to hear your story - I wanted to ask what tests scans did you have before A& E. I've had transvaginal ultrasound, hysteroscopy with biopsy of womb, smear check & breast mammogram & ultrasound for lump.
Everything is clear but I'm still getting vaginal bleeds ( 5 since end of December) pain on left side up to and under rib & exhausted all the time.
What tests did you have & why do you think it wasn't picked up.
I am being fobbed off with its the HRT!!
Hi Inpain2021
In 2019 when symptoms began to intensify even more, I had transvaginal ultrasound and abdominal ultrasound, both showed up nothing, I requested for the coil to be removed so I could better monitor what my monthly cycles were doing, I kept going back to the doctors and she examined me several times, she couldn't see anything unusual although I bled every time. My smears were normal too. I am stumped as to why nothing ever showed up and quite frustrated that she never seemed bothered to push for more tests. In the end I stopped going to the docs because I felt there was nothing else they could do for me. Maybe it was just my age and things changing and I'd just have to live with it. The cancer wasn't relative to hpv so wouldn't be detected by a smear. The cysts were never picked up on ultrasounds... maybe they weren't done properly. I'm just glad I trusted my instincs when I did and went to a&e.
I sincerely hope you will find out what is causing your bleeding. Being fobbed off with "it could be" is so frustrating x
Thanks for your reply appreciate it & sending a hug.
Can I ask you ladies have any of you had constipation with your symptoms? So when your smears and scans were normal... Was it an issue at all?
