Hi everyone!
just thought I would share some positive news…

I have had the call… I am cancer free

  • Hi Sarah, good to see that you're still doing really well.  Good luck for your appointment xxx

  • Thanks

The pre op is just a round of tests like blood pressure, ecg and stuff so it’s nothing to bother about. I’m more concerned about another operation. Don’t need a scan for it-I asked! Had to have a CT in February but it was nice and short.

If I’d had an mri at my 9 month check up, it probably would have come back fine because my recurrence was too small to have been picked up on it. So I’m actually very grateful that my consultant was doing a visual check because what he spotted was so tiny. By the time I did have my mri it was growing fast and did get picked up. I suppose that’s why my team rely on their physical checking  rather than the mri as it’s possibly better for picking up small things. I had zero symptoms that my cancer was back so would otherwise have no reason to get a scan.

Hope your scan goes well next month!

    Sarah xx

  • Glad you’re doing ok! Take care and good luck for your op! Xx

  • Aw really! Glad you’re feeling better! Thank you so much for your reply! Good luck to you too xxx

  • Oh thanks for the reassurance Sarah, there are always positive ways to look at things I guessGrin.  Good news that you don't have to have another scan, that must be such a relief!   I hope all goes well with your operation and that you recover very quickly xxx

  • Thanks Julie.  I’d rather rely on the visual checks and pokes first, rather than scans personally as scans are not the be all and end all in my opinion and from my experience. No scan picked up the radiation damage I had so it was a surprise for my surgeon opening me up for the salvage hysterectomy and finding it, meaning surgery had to be abandoned.

None of my consultants or surgeons will use the words “cancer free”-they never have because scans can’t pick up any escaped cells, so I’ve always had to accept NED as the most they are able to say with confidence. But that’s ok-I’ve learned to accept it and feel lucky to be told that!

  • I know what you mean Sarah my initial diagnosis was found through visual examination and a poke around. Each case is different isn’t it. When my consultant rang she was very careful with her words ‘that at this moment cancer free - no signs of cancer.’  ‘But we need to keep a close eye’ I’d also had a full body PET scan too. However it’s detected or found - as long as it is found sooner that’s all that matters. Really wish you all the luck and speedy recovery, take care and hope your op goes well, let us know how you get on xx

  • Hi

Yes, you’re absolutely right-it’s all about finding things quickly. I think because I was NED at my 3 month scan, but it wasn’t actually gone in reality, I’m more cautious now. My consultant then, and my surgeon now, always have the word “but” after they say NED! But I try just to get on with life now as best I can.

It’s apparently a few weeks recovery from my next operation, so I’ll be taking things easy, but hoping to have keyhole surgery this time. Thank you for the kind wishes!

    Sarah xx
