MDT

Hello I'm wondering in anyone can give me advice/put my mind at ease my anxiety is through the roof.

I had my smear in April and my results came back at the end of May as Hpv positive with high-grade dyskaryosis. I had a phone call from a nurse who said I needed to be seen within 2 weeks. I attended the hospital on 16th June and had a lletz procedure and was told a sample was sent off for testing and would receive a face to face appointment in 4-6 weeks.

Last night at 5pm I received a phone call from my own GP informing me that they had receive a report back from the specialist and my case was being discussed in an MDT meeting. He was very vague with everything but mentioned CIN2 and CIN3 and that I would need treatment. I was under the impression that the lletz procedure was my treatment. Obviously being 5pm on a Friday I was unable to call the number I had got the hospital and can't speak to anyone until half 9 Monday morning.

It's all worried me with my initial letter saying I would have a face to face appointment in 4-6 week with results but my own GP calling me after just over 2 weeks. Every possibility is running through my head. Sorry for the long post. Thank you

  • Hi  and welcome to our group.

I can appreciate that you are worried, especially since your gp has phoned you rather than the hospital. It’s really not helpful when a gp does that when it’s the hospital team who are making the decisions and gps tend not be be always well informed-it just gives patients extra worry.

The LLETZ is treatment for abnormal cells like CIN2 or 3, you are correct, but results are discussed at an MDT meeting multi disciplinary team) as a matter of course. This will confirm what has been identified when the samples sent to the lab after the LLETZ have been tested.

It may be that the LLETZ has removed everything with clear margins (ie a healthy margin of cells around the cells removed) but sometimes this is not achieved and further treatment is required. It is possible that cancerous cells have been discovered in the LLETZ but have been fully removed during the LLETZ or may need further treatment.

It’s unlikely that you will be given information if you call the hospital as it’s better to discuss your results in a face to face appointment so you can have a full discussion about your results and have the chance to ask any questions. Admin staff are not allowed to give results as they are not qualified to answer any questions you may have.

It’s very difficult to try and guess what your appointment might tell you, and I know it will be difficult for you not to worry about it, but try not to let your thoughts run wild before you know anything for sure.

I hope you’ll get your appointment through soon and it puts your mind at rest.

  • Thank you for taking the time to reply to me it's been a real help

  • So I've now actually received a letter from the hospital which states

"the loop contained changes called CIN 2 and CIN 3 with involvement of some of the margins therefore it needs to be discussed in our colposcopy mdt to decide on the next step in your management"

The next meeting is 31st July

  • Hi

I’m sorry you’ve got so long to wait to find out more-it’s hard when we don’t know what’s coming next.

The good news is that the changes found are CIN 2 and CIN 3 as these are pre cancerous cells and not cancer. When clear margins are not obtained, the MDT will decide on the next course of treatment to make sure that all the abnormal cells are fully removed-as I mentioned before, it’s important to get these clear margins to be certain of that.

It’s hard not to worry, but try to keep yourself busy and distracted as much as you can while you’re waiting for the meeting to take place-not easy, I know. Please keep us posted with how you get on.
