Hello everyone,

i am 57 and just had a colposcopy after my smear test came back abnormal.

I do have high grade HPV and low grade Dyskaryosis.

Anyway, a letter has arrived stating they found dense acetowhite and iodine negative changes

The biopsies are are not back as yet.

I am literally crawling the walls with this finding and would love to know what it means, the Dr has also put he will be in touch with a plan as soon as the biopsies are back.

Can anyone enlighten me please?

TIA

    Yes i understand that bit.

I am assuming it is negative changes because of the cells.

Or is it positive for bad cells and negative for basically nothing wrong.

I am assuming negative changes means it hasn't showed up so the cells are bad.

I don't know who to ask.

  • There should be a number on your letter to phone, and you could ask for the dr who did the procedure, or for his secretary to leave a message to be called back with an explanation. He should be able to explain this even though the biopsies aren't back yet. I’d give that a try if you really feel unable to wait. It’s probably not helpful to try and guess as it will stress you out more.

Thank you, yes i already did that but she wouldn't say anything except i may have to come back for another smear and colposcopy in the future.

Biopsy won't be back and written up until next week, she said it will be reviewed and a letter sent out week after next.

I doubt the biopsy will be bad or i would have heard by now, however i am still stuck with dense acetowhite changes and iodine negative changes going around in my head from the last letter.

I am still non the wiser.

  • It’s tough when they don’t explain things but it sounds like there is nothing major to worry about, unless the biopsies identify anything. If you’re getting a letter rather than a face to face appointment, and there is talk of another smear and colposcopy, then that would seem to indicate abnormal cells, treatment and then a follow up smear for test of cure. It wouldn’t be the process for a cancer diagnosis. The changes identified relate to abnormal cells, but the biopsies will give the definitive confirmation of what is there.

The waiting is awful, as we all know, but the whole process is a waiting game, and no news is good news!

I have been told i will have a follow up plan.

No signs of biopsy report as yet but he did say i will need treatment .

That is fine by me if i do.

I just wish i knew what iodine negative is and dense acetowhite changes.

  • Looks like they’re not prepared to give you any explanation at all until the biopsy result comes back, so not a lot you can do till then unfortunately, and as none of us on the forum are medics, it’s not really appropriate for any of us here to speculate on the meaning of this. Hope you don’t have much longer to wait to find out the next steps.

  • Hi Daisymae

I don't have a lot of knowledge but it sounds like the treatment could be a lettz procedure to scrape away any abnormal cells? I'm realy not sure but they don't seem to be rushing things and if they suspected anything more sinister you would be fast tracked. I know the "not knowing" is the absolute worst thing to handle but can you ring your GP and ask them to explain? They'll have a report from the hospital and should b up to date with what's happening. I hope you get real answers very soon as the anxiety is very real. Take care and let us know.

    Yes me too.

    Sick of waiting.

I am expecting to have treatment but the waiting and the blooming nonsensical letter has really made me mad as i have no idea what it all means.

Been reading and dense acetowhite is a higher CIN.

Not nervous at all i would sooner have treatment than sit waiting and returning.

Just baffled as i cannot find out what iodine neg means except that if the cells are higher grade they won't stain.

I feel certain it is higher than the smear showed ( CIN 1) i just want to know and do something positive and get it removed.

    Not afraid one bit honest.

  • I’m not sure about what you’ve read to be honest, about the levels of CIN and the staining etc, but the standard treatment would be a LLETZ procedure for abnormal cells, which is removal with a heated wire loop. Probably would have been better not to send any letter at all when they aren’t prepared to explain it!

  • Hi

Sarah can explain in more detail about the cin stages..I went straight from a smear to hpv positive to cervical cancer so I had no in-between. So I'm a bit useless lol. I realy hope u ring your GP as they can explain all of that. Even a  phone consultation will be better than no information at all so give them a call tomorrow and keep me posted.
