Hey everyone, i got a call on monday night to tell me i had cervical cancer.  Im on my own with 2 sons 9 yrs old a 1 years old. Im so scared for them. The doctors were going for a meeting today about a plan for me and i have not heard back yet im really anxious. Any tips on how not to think the worst x

  • Hi Jen

Your experience was awful, no other word for it, but so glad it improved for you. And you’ve come through and done so well, despite the bad start. I didn’t particularly have a good relationship with my very first consultant, mainly because he never once called me by my name, BUT he was really good at his job, and because of him my recurrence was picked up at a check up so I will always be thankful for his keen eye and expertise.

i then got moved to another consultant who is a surgeon, and she was absolutely brilliant and saved my life, so I’ve been very lucky all round really. xx

Yes i called secretary of the of the surgeon who called the other night to just ask if i had been passed over yet but he has not got back to me xx

  • You do need to know where things are at. I would agree with Jen and try again with the surgeon’s secretary to push for info on getting a face to face appointment with the oncologist. You need to know what’s going on, and you need a timescale. xx

Hopefully the surgeon will get back to me tomorrow and i can ask him of he can give me a name or number to get in touch with an oncology doctor that will be dealing with me x

  • Hopefully you’ll get a call and know who you’ve been passed on to. You can’t wait over another weekend without knowing what’s going to be happening-this is cruel. xx

So a nurse has called me after ive pestered a secetary all day.  Basically i was told in money by the surgeon the meeting about me would be wed. She has jst says the cut off date for meetings is a fri and me results did not come in till monday so my meeting is next Wednesday. At least i know why no1 has contacted me. She also says its grade 1, i thought it was stage 1 and she says no they are different and wont know what stage until hysterectomy is done which is looking like probably the plan. And will be on a 6-8week waiting list hut will know more when they call next thur morning xx

  • Hi Carla

At least you have had a call!  Yes, grade and stage mean different things. Grade 1 refers to the level of abnormality in the cells, ranging from grade 1 being least abnormal to grade 3 meaning  most abnormal and stage refers to the cancer from stage 1 to stage 4 depending on size, spread etc.

The stage should be established BEFORE a hysterectomy is done, not after, so I find that a little strange. I do hope they will explain some more to you in the next call. I think you should be asking some questions if not. xx

Yes, im going to have questions write down for nex Thursday when they call x

  • Hi Carla

That’s a good idea to write questions down-it’s so easy to forget when you’re on the phone. If there is anything you don’t understand, ask them to explain again. Don’t let them rush you and use all medical terms. Ask them to explain exactly what will happen in straightforward words, not medical jargon if they do this. This is your body and you need to be fully advised about what will happen. There are several different types of hysterectomy, and several different methods used to perform the surgery so it’s very important to be clear on what they will do and the reasons for it. xx
