Two week rule

Hi.  After an examination at my GP surgery I’ve been referred to a gynaecologist under the two week rule.  This is because my cervix looked red.  My appointment is on the 24th March which seems like a lifetime away. I went on the sick after being referred because I feel so scared.  I’ve googled away and found out loads of information and try to keep telling myself that it’ll be ok.   My last smear was five years ago, I’m over 50 now so it’s every five years.  The nurse I saw said it could be anything, not necessarily cervical cancer but obviously I’m thinking the worst.  Only my husband knows as I don’t want to worry the family.  How do you cope with the waiting?  I’m due back at work on Wednesday but don’t know how I’ll cope.  It all seems so unreal and even though I’ve kept busy over the last few days I’m starting to flag.  I go from feeling positive to thinking I’m going to die by Christmas.  Is this normal.  I feel so confused.

  • Hi and welcome to the Online Community. Any possibility of cancer diagnosis brings stress and fears of the unknown. You've been put on the 2 week wait rule so very quickly you'll be invited for tests and biopsies to check things out.

I see you've joined this forum so I'm sure someone will be along soon to chat. Yes, I agree the the waiting is so hard but despite Covid our NHS is on top of things. I myself had (note past tense) Endometrial (Womb) Cancer diagnosed last August but treatments all finished in November.

When you have a minute, it would be helpful if you could pop something about your  journey so far into your profile as it really helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. (It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself.) To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can update it at any time.

We all agree, looking at Dr Google isn’t a good idea. It’s always good to talk and the Macmillan Support Services provides lots of information, support, financial guidance or just a listening ear.

Most services are open 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week and it's free to call on 0808 808 00 00 have a look by Clicking here to see what is available and we also have our Ask an Expert section, but do allow two working days for replies from our expert team.

To find information covering diagnosis, treatments and pages covering most types of cancers can be found on our Online Information and Support Section.

Sending you welcoming hugs, B xx Hugging
