Hi all ,
I had stage 2b cervical cancer in 2019 had treatment chemo radiotherapy and brachytherapy.
had the all clear in December 2024 ,then started having pains so I asked for mri recieved mri in March 25 they confirmed on my telephone appointment in begining of may that a 1cm nodule was found with no hyperactivity .
on the 20th may went an met my consultant and he said they wanted to remove the nodule and take a tissue sample and do a biopsy.
the biopsy took place on 18th June ,the appointment was very delayed as day care patient went in at 11am biopsy took place at 6.30pm.
due to the lateness I was moved to a ward and was told once I been to toilet,I done this and then given discharge letter .
i did not look at my discharge letter till the morning and on my letter it stated ranking cervical cancer( confirmed) then dated 18th June.
im going out of my mind I called my nurse the next morning asking and she said I just need to wait for confirmation and she would speak to the surgeon.she is now on annual leave.
i was not told this was cancer before as they said have to wait for biosy
why has this been put on discharge and no one spoke to me before I left the hospital
has this happened to anyone else?
many thanks in advance

Hi Jm12 Jen
No wonder things look confusing! I haven’t had the same, but have had many different discharge letters in my time and they are not always worded in the best way.
Looking at this from another viewpoint, I read this is in a different way. Just looking at the timings logically- the biopsy was done at 6.30pm…later that evening you went to the ward and after that you were discharged, with this letter, I’m presuming still on 18th June?
At the time the discharge letter was typed up, the results of the biopsy wouldn’t have been known, but cervical cancer is on the letter as it was your original diagnosis in 2019 and the reason for needing the biopsy now is because of investigations into that original cancer.
The letter states the biopsy has been carried out but it doesn’t state the result here, which it would if the result were known. If disease is found again after a biopsy as it was for me, it was from then on always referred to as “recurrent cervical cancer”
I’m thinking you may be jumping the gun here, but quite understandably it’s panicked you. There should be a further letter, or an appointment with your consultant when the biopsy is analysed and the results are known which will give the full details, so you’ll need to wait for that to know more.
I hope this is clear and the most likely explanation, and it would be why you weren’t told this was cancer when you were discharged-they simply don’t know at that point,
Sarah xx
