Hysterectomy waiting times

Hi,

I was wondering how long I might have to wait for my hysterectomy. I was diagnosed with Stage 1 Grade 3 cancer on Wednesday. My first oncology appointment is on 7th August. I have no idea what will be discussed, but I know that I’ll be having a hysterectomy following the discussion I had with the colposcopy nurse when I was given my diagnosis.

I really hope I won’t have to wait for long. I hate the thought of having this evil thing inside of me, and fear it spreading before they operate. I know this is irrational, but that’s how anxious I’m feeling.

  • Hi

It’s hard to say, as it will depend on your own hospital. Prior to surgery you would need a pre op assessment appointment (basically assessing your fitness and ability to go through surgery) and assuming all is fine with that the surgery can be scheduled.

At the oncology appointment, if your consultant confirms you are definitely having a hysterectomy, typically you would be advised of which type of hysterectomy (there are several different kinds) and you will need to sign consent for the surgery after having all the risks explained to you.

I do understand it is a very anxious time waiting for this. When I had my recurrence diagnosed from a biopsy under anaesthetic, this was in the November. I met with my consultant and my salvage hysterectomy was scheduled for the first week in January, although I was offered a slot the week before for New Years Eve which I declined. So for me it was around 6 weeks wait.

I do see others having their surgeries far quicker than this, but this was what happened in my hospital. Hopefully you won’t have long to wait, and you should get an idea of the likely timescales when you have your appointment in the 7th.

  • Hi Sarah, thank you Relaxed️ I’m feeling nervous, but looking forward to getting some answers. I’ve written down a lot of questions for the consultant. Xx

  • That’s great! Things can be overwhelming at appointments and it so easy not to take things in. Much more helpful to have your list of questions and work your way through. I once came out with a sheet of A4 with questions and got them all answered!

  • Hi Sarah / all.

I had my appointment with the consultant and I have a radical hysterectomy planned for this Thursday. I’m really pleased about how quickly things are moving now. I’m nervous, of course.. but hopefully the operation will be the only treatment I will need.

A question about the radical hysterectomy…

how long can I expect to be in hospital for?

    Thanks xx

  • Hi there, I have mine at the end of this month and I have been told 5 days. Hope this helps!
