Hi, I have my surgery coming up for a full hysterectomy. I know everyone is different and so recovery is different for each person but I'm looking for a bit of a clearer idea of what recovery is like.
I know I won't be able to bend or lift for a while but that's all I know really and I'm changing my house and moving things around so that I can avoid those things and I have grabbing stick from when I broke my leg too.
I (very happily) live by myself so my dad, brother and me are planning when they come stay with me. Will I need someone with me all the time? Or just for the first few days? I have volunteers chores so I'm not worried about that.
Any help will be appreciated!
Thanks,
Em.
Hi and welcome to the Online Community. I'm going to suggest you join us ladies in the Womb cancer group as we've all had hysterectomies.
Do you know if you are having keyhole or open surgery yet? The recovery from Laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery is very quick. Some ladies were discharged from hospital on the very same day I do recall. I had a long journey so my surgeon didn't want me to have a 2.5 hour car journey so she kept me in an extra night then constipation and trapped wind meant another!! You'll just have 4 small scars on your tummy and I'll say I just suffered discomfort rather than pain (except for the trapped wind!)
Yes you're right, no lifting or bending. You might also find this link to what to take in my overnight bag useful. Funnily enough I've just added a litter picking stick!
Now's the time to batch cook for the freezer, move things so they'll be within easy reach, clean out the kitchen cupboards (for some reason, we've all done that!)
If keyhole, you should be able to drive 6 weeks later , you need to check with your insurer - they all differ! My car's automatic so no problem but hubby's manual - a bit harder. You have to be able to do an emergency stop basically. I took a cushion with me to protect my tummy to start with.
Any questions come back and ask us in the Womb forum.
Sending hugs, B xx
