Hi, my wife received her first chemo on Friday and her appetite is non existent.  I am starting to get concerned as she will be unable to continue with chemo if she doesn't eat enough.  Can anyone tell me if her appetite will improve after the first week every treatment or does it improve? Also, is there anything that anyone did that helped to stimulate their appetite?

Hi Aldosan, i found that eating things that contained pineapple or ginger were tolerable, fresh pineapple was good as were Pineapple ice lollies.Ginger biscuits and spicy foods were better than bland foods if she can stomach them. Small and often i found worked well too. When you are on chemo everything smells like a wet dog so you don't want to eat. Don't try and force her to have things as it won't help. If she cant even eat the things i have suggested then the doctor can prescribe drinks with all the nutrients she needs. I hope she feels better soon. All the best. Lynn 2 xxx

    hi Aldosan,

not sure if your wife is having chemo for a week then 3 weeks off like my wife. But I found that the week of chemo the appetite was poor and the second week it was fatigue and the 3rd and 4th week much better all round.  Lynn2 is right fresh pineapple is brilliant as I believe it has properties that help to ease the effects of chemo.

The first week of chemo is likely to be the worst anyway as it is a brute of a drug so try not worry, as it will get better.  Try the basics soups and so forth but add in things that add calories and protein when you can.

Also there are a few products in chemists that build appetite if that helps
