Hi,
My wife Nikki is currently undergoing treatment for secondary breast cancer and am concerned for her.
Diagnosis in August 2015, lumpectomy, chemotherapy, radiotherapy treatment.
Secondary diagnosis October 2022. Current treatment is Letrozole, Abemaciclib and Zoladex.
We went on holiday to Florida at the beginning of May. Towards the end of the holiday Nikki was sick (clear fluid) during the night. On and off she has been sick up until this week. When on Thursday she started to constantly be sick. We visited the oncology suite after talking to the emergency oncology unit yesterday. The nurse is thinking it is a bug she caught, given fluid and some IV medication. We came home and no real change, lots of sickness. She started taking prescribed anti sickness medication this morning. How long does it take to work as the nurse said give it a few days but we’re thinking of taking her to A&E tomorrow if no improvement.
Her quarterly scan is due in 9 days too. Anyone know of someone who has experienced frequent vomiting with this treatment and how long does it take for anti-sickness medication to work?
Nikki's oncology appointment has been moved to next Friday.
Today was the first time in almost a week she has been able to eat something. Only toast, a strawberry and a bit if mash at various times in the day. Baby steps.
Great to hear she's managed something to eat today. Hope the appointment goes well.
Anne
That’s good news! I’m sure she’ll get stronger by the day. Good luck for next week. Xx
Hi Bazza7676,
I hope your Wife is feeling better today. I’m similar but I was on slightly different treatment for breast cancer with bone mets. Just over a year ago I had sickness and stomach pain, after a stay in hospital it was discovered that I had cancer in the lymph nodes near my lungs and started on a course of Paclitaxel. Whilst the Paclitaxel improved some areas I had high blood pressure and urinary problems. After an operation and a biopsy taken, the breast cancer had reached the bladder. The cancer had also changed to Triple Negative where before my cancer was driven by estrogen. Cancer is a slippery beast.
I’m not sure of my plan, as waiting for an appointment.
Has your Wife had a biopsy done to the new areas or is it being planned?
As the lovely person above said, look after yourself.
k
Hopefully, the procedures will happen soon so you know what you’re dealing with . It may not even be Mets but something else , I really hope it is something else but worst case scenario, they will make sure she’s on the right treatment. My mother in law has just been diagnosed with lung cancer and something has shown up on her bowel on the scan but they’re unsure what it is and said it may not be mets. She’s having a camera next week. The waiting is just awful but I’m glad something is being done for you. Is Nikki still in hospital and stable now after the vomiting ? I know you must be out of your mind. It’s so upsetting for our partners too but you will both get through this. It’s such a bloody rollercoaster that none of us want to be on! Take care xx
It is a roller coaster that nobody understands unless you have experienced it. A lot of of people don't understand what secondary breast cancer is either.
Nikki is at home, eating very small amounts but rarely being sick now which is positive.
It's my birthday tomorrow and she still wants to go to our caravan for a bit of normality.
Fingers crossed for your mother in law too.
No they really don’t so it’s good to talk to people that are going through it on here or support groups which includes family. I have a friend who I met on here who is going through a similar situation and she lives near me so we keep in touch, laugh and cry together and meet up monthly. I never would have met her without this forum so I am very grateful. I don’t go on here all the time but it’s a great support forum and is good to share knowledge and emotions. There should be more awareness of secondary BC in general! Anyway, I’m so glad Nikki is home and feeling a little better . Enjoy your birthday and little break. It will be nice to switch off from it all for a couple of days if you can. Thank you and take care xx
So the vomiting inability to swallow is likely down to the abemaciclib. Nikki has gradually got better since she stopped taking. Depending on the outcome below she may move to a lower dosage after a break.
The possible bad news is there might be mets in her bladder and maybe bowels (although that could be inflammation again due to the abemaciclib)
Her cystocopy is taking place this morning. Wish her luck x
