My mum has been told she has secondary breast cancer spread to lung. The hospital has decided the only appropriate treatment is some tablets to block the hormone which is causing the cancer.

Mum has a cough and is breathless. I asked the consultant whether there is anything to relieve these symptoms and she said no.

Has anyone been in a similar situation to Mum and if so, we're these symptoms relieved?

  • Hi there, I was thinking maybe speak to the Doctor about relief maybe in the form of an asthma pump. I was prescribed one to help alleviate mild breathlessness problems and anxiety.
best of luck to your mum, I hope she recovers well and gets some help.

  • Hi, I have secondary breast cancer spread to the lung and I am also breathless and have a cough. I have just been prescribed morphine ( low dose) to help with the breathlessness along with an inhaler. Only got them today but will let you know if they help.

  • Thank you Denty, that's hopeful.

  • I was diagnosed with nodules in the lungs last year (BC). I’ve been on chemo ever since (Carboplatin and Paclitaxel - now just Paclitaxel). I noticed an immediate improvement in my lungs though if I have a cold I still get wheezy and breathless. The respiratory doctor gave me a Fostair inhaler. Perhaps that would help your Mum as it does help me somewhat. Maybe she needs to talk to a respiratory doctor also. I have heard morphine helps with breathlessness but maybe she needs more than hormone tablets  though maybe doctors have judged that she can’t take chemo. All the best to you and your Mum.

  • Thank you Shalli.

Yes, the doctor says she is not strong enough for chemo etc. The inhaler sounds a possibility. Hopefully she can have an appointment soon.

    Wishing you all the best.
