Treatment for secondary metastatic breast cancer

I have secondary metastatic breast cancer in my spine and sacrum, recently it was also found in my femur. Oncologist and orthopedic surgeon are unclear if this is new or has always been there Thinking

The orthopedic surgeon recommended i start zolendronic acid treatment, this was mentioned by my oncologist right at the beginning but with other treatments it never happened. When I had telephone appointment this week I asked about it but was told that as I have dunosumab injection I don't need it. I just wonder why the surgeon recommended it in his letter, we discussed the current treatment plan so he was aware of what medication I'm on.

Does anyone else have both or just one of these treatments?

Many thanks for reading xx

  • Hi, sounds similar to my journey since December 2024. Spine and sacrum involvement. Bone mets in femur, needed pin in leg to prevent fracture. Then arm fracture and needed another pin. Have started on Letrozole, Denosumab and tomorrow starting chemo drug Cape. Also some radiotherapy on spine and sacrum. Xx

  • Thanks for taking the time to reply.

I was originally diagnosed in 2021 with BC had x4 surgeries final one being a mastectomy followed by chemo and radiotherapy.

I was on tamoxifen and letrozol when scan showed spread in 2023, more radiotherapy which was tough going but since then pain in back has been much improved and joint pain is nowhere near as bad now i dont take tamoxofen or letrozole. I have very little pain in my femur if any, sometimes my knee aches but I ry to stay as active as possible.

i currently take palbociclib on a 3 weekly cycle with monthly fulvestrant  injections and dunosumab every 3 months.

It's good to hear someone else's experience although I wish we didn't have to xx
