Swollen ankles and feet 4 years after breast cancer

I had a lumpectomy 4 years ago followed by radiotherapy and a series of hormone tablets which all had side effects. Letrozole caused mobility problems, then tamoxifen causing gynae problems, then exomestane caused breast pain and now anastrozole which I thought was going to be fine. I started taking this about 6 months ago. I have started to get very swollen ankles and feet which are worse when I sit down in an evening. I have seen the GP and had blood tests to check my heart and kidneys which have come back normal. I do want to continue with the anastrozole but need to get the swellings down. The GP mentioned support stockings which I had after an operation and found them very uncomfortable.  Is there anything I can do to get back to normal

  • Support stockings are a bit uncomfortable, but they do work and make you feel much better. Another thought, they discovered I had high blood pressure when I was diagnosed ant the first set of tablets prescribed gave me swollen ankles. They changed it and I am fine now. Check the side effects of any meds you are on. Good luck.

  • Thanks Molly but I think I'm on the last choice of tablet unless they put me back onto others I have tried. They all have terrible side effects. It's so hot at the moment I don't think I could stand using the stockings. I have low blood pressure so it's not a result of that.

I might ring the breast care nurse to see if there's anything else I could do

  • I know, I have lymphoedema and wear a sleeve and glove every day. It's been very challenging in this weather. I am on letrozole for 10 years and the side effects are difficult to cope with, but it reduces the chances of the cancer coming back, so I will carry on. Good idea to contact the nurses hope they can help you.
