Evacal versus adcal

I have been taking evacal for bone health after breast cancer 4 years ago. When I collected my prescription I noticed I now have adcal which are slightly different as they need to be chewed whereas the evacal tend to dissolve in your mouth. I'd been taking the adcal for about a week and I suffered the most agonising stomach pains which lasted more than 12 hours. I have been to the doctors and was checked over and deemed ok. My pains had gone by then. I am now suffering with bloating and some discomfort but nothing as bad as before and I have read that adcal can cause these symptoms.  I am going to stop taking them to see if it resolves the problem but don't understand why these would give this side effect when the evacal never did. My prescription didn't change. It was the pharmacy which have given me an alternative. Has anyone else been affected in this way

    1. I didn't like chewing and I now have adcal that I can swallow. 4 large caplets is equivalent to 2 of the chewable tablets.. Haven't noticed any side effects and have been having them for 6+ years.

  • Hi Rozalia I had the Adcal that you chew.  Took two a day.  I now have the ones that you can swallow.  I am only taking two a day, should I have four a day, never read the leaflet Joy.  I have been on Adcal for 13 years with no side effects.

  • Thanks for your reply Rozalia. I think I have found out why the tablets affected me so badly. The Adcal chewable contain soy oil whereas the Evacal I'm prescribed don't. My problem is that I had my gall bladder removed a few years ago which affects digestion. I've looked up soy oil and it's particularly bad for people with no gall bladder. It causes horrendous  pain. I've told the pharmacy I only want evacal in future.i don't know why they are allowed to prescribe alternatives

  • Mine is prescribed by my GP so he set the dose. But  checking the capulets are half the strength of the chewable tablets and 2 in the morning 2 at night is the normal dose.

I am now not under any cancer medication but I haven't queried stopping these because of my age mid 70s and osteoarthritis and I believe they support bones and general health.

  • Hi was interested to hear about soy oil and gall bladder removal. I will pass info to a relative who struggles since having their gall bladder removed. You can learn all sorts on here. Thank you
