Neuropathy prevention with cold gloves and cold socks?

I’m due to start chemo soon. The nurse said I might be a good candidate for cold cap as I have thick hair. She also suggested cold gloves and socks to help prevent neuropathy during treatment. Does anyone have any experience of this or views? Thanks

    Hi Moomin

Am sorry to hear that you need to start chemo soon.

I had chemo in 2022 for endometrial cancer and I used the cold cap. The link above is my experience.

I did develop neuropathy during my chemo and if I had known about the cold gloves and socks, I would certainly have thought about using them. During my chemo I did not see anyone wearing socks or gloves but I did see a couple of people doing scalp cooling. Scalp cooling was mentioned by my consultant but the gloves and socks were not mentioned.

I wish you well with your treatment.

  • Thanks Jane, I think I’d read your article before. Very informative. I think I will give it a try, if I can’t tolerate it I can always stop

  • The first few minutes are tough but then it is ok. I was told to take paracetamol before hand and I think it helped. If you don't like the sensation they can just turn the machine off and it immediately stops the flow of the coolant liquid.

Once the first few minutes were done the sensation is a sort of numb, tightness feeling. I did have a headache afterwards but that could well have been the chemo medication and stress.

    Good Luck
