Tomorrow I have week 6 of 12 weeks of Chemo for Brest Cancer. I have been using a cold cap( tolerable) but as my hair has started to fall out( not in clumps but generally all over(i have very thick hair) should I continue to use the Cold Cap which adds at least an hour to my treatment? Thank you
Hi Lilyofthevalley
I did scalp cooling in 2022 and it is not unusual to have some shedding with each cycle. I was told it was normal and to be expected and wasn't a sign of the cold cap not working. Once I had started cold capping, I did not want to stop as for me it would have meant that I had put myself through the first couple of cycles for nothing. I also feel that the cold cap did help protect my hair follicles and proper regrowth soon started for me. (I did actually experience some regrowth during chemo.
I know it adds a little longer to the chemo day but for me, I felt I was there all day anyway and found the cooling down time a good time to chat with my nurses about everything. The chemo I was on would be 8-around 530 each time.
You are now half way there and it may be as you have very thick hair that you are noticing more loss? Mine did thin all over. It can sometimes help to focus on the hair that is still remaining rather than the hair that has come out.
It's a personal decision really.
This link may help.
Good Luck for your next chemo, whatever you decide.
