I have been diagnosed with grade 3 TNBC. Tumour is 17mm

I am due to have surgery on 25th Feb (wide local excision with sentinel node biopsies). 4 weeks after will require chemo over 5 months then a month break then radiotherapy. Had a really bad morning today, couldn't stop crying Honestly, probably feeling sorry for myself. Feel like everyone around me is getting on with their lives and mine will be on hold for the next 10 months or so.  I don't begrudge anyone doing that of course.  Life goes on.  After about an hour so of solid crying I put my big knickers on and picked myself up. Is this quite normal?

I was actually diagnosed mid December but asked if surgery could be delayed so I can go on holiday which was first week in Feb. I know most people would not want to do that however I was assured at this stage it wouldn't make any difference delaying by a few weeks. Now starting to wish I hadn't made that decision as would now be further down the treatment line. Anyway I had a fab holiday so was worth it.

Does anyone have any advice about buying suitable bra for after surgery?

Also any advice on coldcap? I already have frontal fibrosing alopecia so every strand of hair is important. Thinking of going for cold cap as been told even if you lose your hair if you persevere it's worth it as hair grows back quicker and stronger after. Anyone had this experience?

Also any advice on wigs

Thank you

  • Hi

I’m sorry you have to be here, but welcome!

Yes, it’s perfectly normal! Life has thrown us a massive curveball, it’s only natural to be fearful and tearful at times. Feel free to feel sorry for yourself at times if you need!

I had a lumpectomy and found the best bra to be a high support sports bra which zipped at the front. It was snug enough to hold everything in place with a bit of compression which is good for swelling and slightly padded so felt protective. I also bought some “invisible” crop tops from Primark which I stepped into and were great.

I didn’t have chemo so can’t help with your other queries, but wanted to wish you the best of luck with everything. x

  • Thank you Eebee for your advice. Wishing you all the best and for a speedy recovery

  • Hi Magstar.  I think that you made the right decision on delaying your op and going on holiday.  Good to relax before you start treatment.  I had chemo but did not cold cap as it adds on about two and half hours to your treatment time.  I did lose all my hair but it did grow back quickly although it was quite a bit grey.  I had a synthetic wig as you don't need to style it.  Just wash it and hang it to dry and it styles itself.  Real hair wigs can be very hard to maintain and you have to blow dry and style like your normal hair.  I also used crop tops a lot as no underwires.  Take a button up the front top with you for op as much easier to fasten.  I wish you good luck for your op and chemo treatment.  Big hugs.

  • Thank you leelaloo for your advice. I hope you are keeping well

  • Hello.
I am so sorry about your diagnosis. It is definitely normal to have bad days/moments.
I did cold cap, and although I lost quite a bit of hair, I persevered with it and my hair has started to grow back. I only finished my Chemotherapy 3 weeks ago.
Wishing you all the best. xx

  • Thank you, that's reassuring

  • Hope your recovery goes well
