Lumpectomy and Seroma

I had my lumpectomy last week along with lymph nodes removal. Had to go back to get seroma extracted as it was causing a lot of pain. It feels full again and causing discomfort again. Spoke to a nurse earlier who said that they can only drain once a week and I should take Nurofen to ease swelling and pain. I’m dreading how the weekend will pass if the pain and swelling worsens

  • Hi ManAna, I have had 3 surgeries and haematoma and / or seromas with each one. It is a horrible feeling, as though it is all about to burst open. Doing the exercises very gently but regularly has usually helped me. You could also ring the McMillan helpline for further advice if it gets worse. Sorry not to be more help but wanted to share an empathy hug. X

  • Hi ManAna

I’ve just read your post and wondered if your seroma has dispersed. I had a lumpectomy three weeks ago along with a full auxiliary clearance. I’ve had a seroma for two weeks now which is approx 12cm in size. I’ve had it drained twice but it keeps refilling and, like you, my surgeon is reluctant to continue to drain it. I hope yours has resolved and there’s some hope for me.

  • Hi Guncat,

I can understand your pain and discomfort. My surgeon put in Pico dressing which puts negative pressure on the area and helps drainage. I was having to get it changed twice a day for a few days but finally the fluid coming out has reduced massively and pain is getting better too. They’ve drained from the lymph nodes area about 4 times and from breast once which helps with the pain. I’m going to see the surgeon again on Monday where they’ll tell me what the next step will be.
Hope this helps you and you get help with the pain and drainage.

How are you managing with the leaking Seroma?

  • Hi ManAna

Thanks for getting back to me. It’s really helpful to know your experience. I haven’t heard of a Pico dressing but will ask about it at my next appointment.

My seroma is under my armpit where lymph nodes were removed. It isn’t leaking but is very much putting pressure on the point of incision and, due to its size, is preventing me from putting my arm straight down which, in turn, is causing shoulder discomfort and difficulty sleeping.

I’m hoping my body will reabsorb the fluid but, at the moment, it’s continuing to grow.

All the best for your appointment tomorrow and I hope you have a way forward.
