Hi

After my lump was removed I have tried various medications, the first two with side effects which were getting worse. I have been taking exemestane for about 6 weeks and it's not too bad at the moment apart from feeling very hot when my husband is complaining how cold he is. I read that I would have regular checkups . Will these be with my GP and are these blood tests. The last blood tests I had were in July last year . Do I need to request another blood test or wait until my GP calls me in. I'm not sure how often these should be done. I'm feeling a bit tired but that could just be the time of year

  • Hi

I’m Emma, a member of the team here at Macmillan’s Online Community. I’m sorry to read about the side effects you are experiencing.

I just wanted to let you know that we have an Ask A Nurse forum. This is where you can ask questions to our Cancer Information Nurse Specialists about treatment, side effects and more. They'll respond within 3 working days and are open on weekdays and may be a good option for seeking clarity on the next steps regarding check ups.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi

Good idea above re asking the question in the Ask a nurse section. I’ll be interested to see the reply. I was on Anastrozole for 7 years and read that you should have regular blood tests when on it. But wasn’t offered any apart from when I asked for them. My annual medication review was ‘done’ by my GP practice but was just a tick box exercise as it didn’t involve me at all! A GP just recorded on my patient record that it had been done. I think it was just a check that I was still ‘eligible’ for the medication. I did once ask via my practice’s website for a review and was given a telephone appointment with the practice pharmacist. She asked how I was getting on with the Anastrozole - I told her about my various side effects but said I’d rather stick with it than try a different one. On my request she agreed to a full blood count which showed up nothing of much concern. No follow up though and no further blood tests. I finished my 7 years at the end of November.
Will be interested to see any other replies, obviously I can only speak about my own experience. Love and hugs, HFxx
