I’ve had two lumpectomies after two small tumors were found in my upper right breast. The plan was to remove them and then start radiotherapy and hormone treatment. Unfortunately the edges are still not clear and now I’m given the option another lumpectomy or a mastectomy. My doctor is leaning towards the mastectomy, but mostly for optical reasons as another lumpectomy will likely cause a big dent / hole as too much tissue has already been removed. It’s on the very top of my breast so will be very visual.
i just don’t know what to decide. I’m very scared of a mastectomy. If it was to contain the cancer I’d obviously go for it, but I don’t know if it’s worth it. Any suggestions? Thank you
Hi Evabit,
when I had to have further surgery I was also told probable mastectomy but then I was offered a therapeutic mammoplasty where a large wedge of breast is removed and the remainder reshaped. So you then have a smaller version of your breast. I think different trusts offer different things and I’m not sure how common this is. Maybe you could ask your consultant about it? You could also ask about risks of recurrence with the different options? I was told that my risk of recurrence was the same whether I had the mastectomy or mammoplasty. X
Hello, I think to have a mammoplasty you need to have larger breasts. It certainly is a great choice as symmetry is important.

Hello Evabit, I am sorry you are dealing with this as it is not an easy decision. I live in the US and many women who have issues with dents, different size etc can get fat grafting. They use fst from other areas on your body to even things out. Just a thought that may work for you. I am small breasted and was going to do this if I needed to. There are options . Take care and hugs to you.

Maybe, I am not (wasn’t) big chested - think it depends on the surgeons though as they have to have plastic surgery training.
