29 year old awaiting biopsy results - hoping to hear other people's experiences

I recently had a biopsy and ultrasound due to finding quite a big lump in my left breast near my nipple. My breast has been feeling tender/uncomfortable for a little while prior to this but I thought it was hormonal until I noticed the lump.

What I'm hoping to know is... The radiographer was very evasive when I asked anything. The only info I was given was that it's definitely not a cyst, and she doesn't know what it is, and that my breast on that side is very dense. I asked if it looked suspicious or if she had an idea of what it could be and she just said she didn't know again but definitely not a cyst. Does this sound hopeful to you? From what I've read with other people on here, they were told from the scan it was likely cancer so hoping my radiographers reaction is a good sign and not a bad one. Or do they sometimes just not say anything to avoid distressing you as I was already quite anxious/upset?

I was quite shocked they biopsied as I convinced myself they'd just tell me it was a cyst and everything was fine given my age. Has anyone had a the radiographer say similar and if so what was your outcome? Thanks for reading and sending all my love to everyone finding themselves on here Disappointed x

  • I.   remember my appointment and been told she had found what she was looking for Although it was never confirmed as cancer till I got the biopsy results the information I was given at this appointment indicate it was cancer and if confirmed what would happen once results confirmed this.

Hope everything goes ok for you

    xx

  • Hi there

Sorry you find yourself in this situation. I know it can be a very worrying time.

I was told at my appointment that although the lump, which was diagnosed as breast cancer in the end, was not a cyst, it didn't look like cancer in her opinion and was being biopsied to be on the safe side. Like you, I was shocked that they wanted to do the biopsy as I was 100% convinced it was a cyst due to having two other very recent lumps prior to this that did turn out to be cysts.

I realise that the experience of my initial appointment isn't one of hope, but what I will say is that once diagnosed, they moved extremely quickly and I was given the full, very detailed treatment plan within two days. I had a lumpectomy and lymph node biopsy four weeks after diagnosis and the results came back four weeks after that with clear margins and nodes.

I sincerely hope this works out differently for you and wish you all the very best in finding ways to manage the wait time. x

  • I went for a lump in my armpit but when I was examined something was found in my other breast. I had biopsies done on both and the medical staff at the breast clinic would not give me an opinion at all, just kept saying I would have to wait for the results. I guessed they had found cancer by the way the appointment took so long, having marker clips put in and all that, but nobody would say what they thought it was. The outcome for me was mixed as it turned out the lump was nothing to worry about, but the other stuff I had no clue about was cancer. I know it’s difficult, but the only way you’ll know for sure either way is when the results come back. x

  • Hi thank you for your reply, sorry to hear it was cancer for you, I hope you're doing as well as you can be in this situation x

  • Thank you for your honest response and really sorry to hear it turned out to be cancer for you. If I'm understanding correctly they've managed to cure it for you? I hope you're doing okay x

  • Hi, I'm sorry to hear it was cancer for you. How are you doing now? I'm trying to be hopeful as I don't remember any clips being used (I don't think), just the biopsy that sounded like a stapler? I wasn't seen by a consultant after the scan either which I've seen a fair few people on here mention. I feel I was in and out quite quickly. I get my results on Wednesday, the wait has felt and is feeling like an eternity x

  • good days and bad days Had surgery over a week ago further results in a week or so Stay strong and if it is cancer you will be fully supported and involved in treatment planning
Things move so fast in the first few weeks just remember to make time for yourself xx

  • I was there for hours! When I saw the consultant afterwards she even made a joke with the radiographer about him having spent the whole afternoon with me! I am great now, thank you :-) My diagnosis was almost two years ago and I’ve been very fortunate (thank goodness that lump which was nothing to worry about turned up otherwise I would have had no clue!). I have had fantastic treatment, great results and am happy and healthy. The treatments for me have been a walk in the park compared to waiting for tests and results. It’s horrible, so I really feel for you and am glad you are getting your results soon as whatever happens knowing is better than not knowing. We will all keep our fingers crossed for you. x

  • After finding lump had mammogram, then sent for scan, then biopsy. To be honest,  I knew it was cancer, from the look on the face of nurse who did mammogram, actually told her never to play poker. They wouldn’t actually say at the time and even when they were doing biopsy wouldn’t commit even though I asked, they just said wait and see.

It was cancer, but from then on everything moved so fast and like clockwork. Diagnosed 29 May, lumpectomy 4 July, radiotherapy 1-5 & 8-11 September and luckily felt ok through it all. Still get fatigue at times, still get swelling and a bit tender, but not due to go back until next May unless I have concerns.

It is frightening until you actually know one way or another but then something seems to kick in and you just get on with it.
Hope you get to know soon, hope it’s not cancer, but if it is you’ll deal with it.

    good luck

  • I went for my appointment on Christmas eve as i had found a lump at the end of November. I wasn't really worried as i have known lots of people have lumps checked which were nothing. I got more concerned when i had to go back in to get another mammogram picture taken. The radiographer didn't give much away at all. She took a long time with the ultrasound and told me that she she couldn’t see anything else in the breast and my lymph nodes looked clear but she did need to take biopsies as they needed to work out what was going on with the lump. She put a marker in. I didn’t press her for information as i didn’t think she’d commit to anything. I had my results appointment on New Year’s Eve and was told i had triple negative breast cancer. I had a lumpectomy and sentinal lymph node biopsy on Thursday. I am going back on 28th. It’s been a complete shock and the waiting is definitely the worst part.  I am older than you at 55. I wish you the very best of luck snd hope your results are better.
