Hi, my mum is 63 has stage 2 Er Pr positive her2: negative. 1/1 node with micromets & LVI positive.

She had a lumpectomy end of September with clear margins and onco score came back 16th November and said she needed chemo.

We found out today her first chemo session won’t be until 23rd December. I thought it would be much sooner than this so it’s a bit annoying but Apparantly there is a backlog at the hospital.

is this normal scheduling time (to me it seems really long) and how can we be sure the cells that maybe lurking won’t spread in this time?

Any help at this stressful time please.

Thank-you.

  • Hi

I was just slightly younger than your mum when I was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer three years ago. I had a lumpectomy at the end of April with clear margins but micro deposits of cancer cells were found in one of the 2 lymph nodes removed for testing.

I saw my oncologist at the beginning of June and, because of the micro deposits, I was offered chemotherapy. Because my type of breast cancer can't be tested by the Oncotype test, it meant I didn't have to wait for that result to come back before my chemo could start. So as soon as there was a place available, about 3 weeks after seeing the oncologist, I was able to start chemo.

I'm sure that every hospital's chemo ward will be running at maximum capacity all year round which means, unfortunately, that your mum has to wait for someone to finish their treatment before she can start hers. I understand, having been through it myself, that having to wait can feel very frustrating.

Wishing you and your mum all the best

  • Hi Clairbear,

I'm sorry your mum has had this diagnosis. I am also Stage 2, hormone +ve, HER2 low, with nodes involved and LVI. If it's helpful, here is my timeline. I had my last surgery 31st July (lumpectomy 3rd July, and then the last for clear margins) and started chemo on the 18th September. I had to heal after surgery, then go back to my surgeon to be signed off, then go see my oncologist, have the various scans and blood tests and so mid September came round quick enough. They blast everything with the chemo, I've done 4 out of 6 sessions so far as they are 3 weekly.

I understand the waiting is very hard. Wishing your mum all the best.

  • Thank-you. So I’m guessing in this 12-13 week period since the lumpectomy the chance is low of spreading through nodes or blood? This is the most stressful part!
