Rib cage pain

Hi I am having docetaxol every 3 weeks and filgrastim injections for 7 days on round 5 and have a constant ache around my sternum/ rib cage. Feels bruised and I keep feeling my bra is cutting in to me - it won’t go away and I am worried the breast cancer may be coming back as it was close to the margins when I had my mastectomy . It’s only on the side I had cancer - has anyone else experienced this ?

  • Hello

I am sorry to hear your experiencing pain around your rib cage.  I haven't had this experience (didn't need chemo.) but as your question has dropped to page 2, I'm answering to 'bump' it back to page 1 in the hope that there's someone around who can help now.

    Kindest wishes, Lesley

  • Hi when I had the filgrastim with my chemo I was in terrible pulsing pain that was in my sternum, back, hips and thighs. If I coughed it pulsed if I pooped it pulsed if I moved it pulsed. I was too scared to take paracetamol incase it lowered my temp but after phoning the chemo unit they assured me it was safe to have paracetamol. It did really help take the edge off and I was no longer rocking with the pain X if you are really worried contact your team X I'm two years post treatment and the boob that had the lumpectomy and later cavity shave still throbs a bit now and then x good luck with the treatment xxxx

  • Oh my - I could have written this myself, I felt exactly the same last week. It was my ribs area on my left side that hurt more than everywhere else - but everywhere else also hurt. It was awful.  I did 3 ECs and I was lucky with minimal side effects. 17th November I had my first Docetaxel and the pegfilgristim injection the day after (6mg) and the next 4 days I was beside myself. I couldn't wear a bra, I couldn't sleep. Paracetamol and codeine were not making much difference. I am going to mention to Onco at next meeting but the chemo helpline said it was normal unfortunately. Also my 2 scars where I had the lumpectomy and sentinel node biopsy were really really painful too - apparently this is normal.

How many Docetaxels have you had - 5? Did you ache on the other rounds too?

  • Hi, thanks for responding and it is a strange comfort to hear we are going through similar experiences- wish we both weren’t . Or any of the people we see in these platforms . I have had my 5th cycle so 1 more to go. This round is a bit worse but I did ache last time too. They have given me some morphine to help me sleep and despite not wanting to take it too often . I do find it helps - especially lets me sleep through the night mainly . Might be worth asking your doctor for some as the nurses said to me there is no point suffering x
