Hey
Got diagnosed on 30th Sept 2025. Have had 2 doses of EC (3rd Nov & 21st Nov). Used cold cap.
I have thin hair but (usually) lots of it.
Read advice here so only been washing my hair twice a week. Today, I reckon i lost about 30%. It was handfuls.
I guess my question is, will today be it and I'll keep the rest for a while? Or is this the start and once it starts coming out it won't stop?
Appreciate any advice!
Hey, for what it’s worth if you are not finding the process too stressful I would stick with the scalp cooling . I gave up when my hair started to drop, although now I am nearing the end of my chemo I can see that I definitely have more hair in the areas that were cooled whereas around the edges where the cap can’t reach I went bald completely . So it must have worked to some extent . It’s normal to lose up to 50% . If I had treatment again I would stick with the cold cap but have my hair cut short as having long hair coming out bothered me . If you can keep some of it - it will make the process after treatment ends of growing back easier . As I have next to nothing now . Hope that helps . Good luck !
I was also told to wash it once a week. Aveeno shampoo is really gentle and would highly recommend .
Hi. I cold capped. I had 3 EC’s and lost most of my hair. I had 9 paclitaxal and carboplatin and didn’t lost any hair just a little from the sides then went on to EC and it came out in clumps. I remember one night filling a plastic bag full of my hair. I lost most after the last one. My hair was naturally curly and it really dried my hair out and it kept matting . I did leave the matts in but it was weighing my hair down so I cut them out. Finished chemo 4th Aug and it’s slowly growing back, all the bald patches are grown back in now.
You really do need to be super gentle. I only washed once a week. I didn’t wash it for 3 weeks once and that helped so if you have normal straight hair you could probably go longer.
Thank you. I did have my hair cut into a crop before my first chemo dose. Thought it would be less hair showing on my pillow. Sister got me a silk pillow case which I think has helped.
Just not sure if once it starts to drop, does it all go? Or will this ease off. Getting the same tingle on my scalp that I got downstairs before I lost my lady garden hair (sorry if TMI!)
Oh thank you. I'll get that. I read to use baby shampoo but its left my hair feeling really brittle.
I do have a slight wave but will definitely take the tip to wash it less often.
Washed it 2 days after 2nd EC chemo dose. Think mistake I made was not brushing out loose hair first. When I washed it the whole top of my hair was one big matt, and lifted like a toupe! All of that hair was lost in one go, and then a lot from the side (which i was more expecting).
That’s exactly what happened to mine, one big Matt and lifted like a toupe! EC has a very drying effect and my hair took the brunt of it sadly, no dry skin just hair.
Use plenty of leave in conditioner too, child farm leave in conditioner is good.
Maybe try Afro combs as they are wide toothed and don’t catch so much
I just finished my 3rd cycle of EC and am cold capping. I had a big shed about 4 days after my 2nd EC which lasted about 3 days then it started to slow down. So far I've retained about 70% of my hair. I've one small bald area i can cover ok with the hair I have. I think it was an ill fitted cap that caused it in my 2nd EC. It has thinned a good bit but is holding in there. Fingers crossed! I cut it shoulder length so the shed was manageable. Like others I wash it once a week with simple shampoo and conditioner and use a soft brush in the morning and night to get rid of loose hair to save my carpets! The soft brush captures them well. Moving on to Docetaxal and Phesgo now.
From conversations I had with the nurse that was doing my cold cap (and she wasn’t a specialist on cold capping ) she said you can’t really tell how much hair will fall and each cycle can be different . A work colleague did use the cold cap and she regularly shed hair throughout the process but she kept a pretty good amount of hair right through to the end . She was the one that made me give it a go . I wish I had cut mine short like you have, as I may have stuck with it then. Good luck !
