Hi, my partner has secondary breast cancer with Mets in the spine and a couple of other places.
She is on her 4th round of Paclitaxel as well as Denosamab for her bones. She also had radiotherapy on her spine. We have a consultant appointment soon where we may get some scan results to see if the chemo is working. I'm not sure how long it takes to see if it is working?
I wonder if anyone has experience of moving to an alternative drug if the Paclitaxel not working. Would it be appropriate to be asking about Immunotherapy or are there other chemo drugs to try? How long is long enough on one drug before trying something else. Difficult questions I know but any information or shared experiences would be helpful.
Thanks, John
There are several different sub-types of breast cancer and the treatment options are quite specific to each subtype. Immunotherapy for breast cancer is very limited - essentially it is only used on pd-l1 or pd-1 positive TNBC, which is I think about 4% of breast cancer, although possibly a higher percentage of secondary breast cancer. It’s delivered alongside Paclitaxel if appropriate. Your oncology team will have a good understanding of what might be next steps if needed.
Thanks for your reply. It was interesting to read in your profile of the risks of immunotherapy. As you say the oncologist should know the best options. We will hope for the best and wish you well for the future.
John.
