Future post treatment tests and checks

I have a question, and I need to admit—it’s been bothering me a bit.

Back in January, I was diagnosed with mixed ductal and lobular breast cancer. It was Grade 2, with the largest tumour measuring 88mm, and 19 lymph nodes were involved. I was told I have a high risk of recurrence.

Since then, I’ve completed chemotherapy, had a single mastectomy, and received radiotherapy to treat cancer under my collarbone. I’m now on letrozole and abemaciclib.

My last CT scan showed I’m clear of cancer, and I’m really, really happy about that.

However, at my last appointment, I was told I won’t have any routine future tests or checks for cancer. Any follow-up will be based on symptoms. Is that normal? Should I check with them again?

  • Hi. I think it’s always worth checking if something is bothering you. Perhaps you could give your Breast Care Team a call?  I have always found mine most helpful. Wishing you all the best

  • I know how you feel, all these tests and invasive treatment and then nothing. I had a double mastectomy so don't even have a mammogram each year. I was her2+ and Er & Pr +v grade 3, 3 tumours but luckily for me no sign in the lymph nodes. I am now post 5 years finishing exemestane. Officially clear except it's called remission so how do we know to there is nothing there? I don't even think there is a test you can get done privately. I find it quite scary. X

  • Thank you for the reply

  • Hi. I'm similar to you in the fact I also had mixed ILC and IDC, but in both breasts. I had my bilateral mastectomy in Jan and after chemo and radiotherapy,  I'm now in Anastrozole and Abemaciclib.

I get 6 monthly checks/examinations with my consultant (obvs can't have mammograms) for the next 5 years. I'd assumed that was standard.

I must admit, I do like the security of knowing I have them, so understand why you are questioning it.

Hope you get something sorted x
