Lymphoedema in ankles after breast surgery

Hi

I had my Lumpectomy and all lymph nodes removed last November, finished chemo and Radiotherapy in June.

The last day or so my ankles are swelling, not loads but it’s obvious, yet my hands and feet feel cold.

My arm surgery side is achy too but no swelling there.

Is this normal? Lymphoedema? It’s not red or sore.

I’m more tired than normal and worry something is going on that shouldn’t be.

any advice is appreciated

  • Hi  , sorry you’ve got this new worry. I’m not a medic, just reflecting on stuff I’ve encountered on my own cancer experience and from reading stuff here. I believe that others here have mentioned swollen ankles when on hormone treatment, are you on that? I think that would be classed as edema rather than lympheodema as I’m assuming you didn’t have lymph nodes removed from your lower body. But the achy arm could be connected to your surgery, I would have thought. Either way, I’d be inclined to contact the breast team. I’ve done this a few times since my diagnosis, in between my annual mammograms. I hate doing it as I feel like I’m wasting their time/ fussing about nothing, but they’ve never made me feel like that. And it’s been very reassuring to get checked. So far so good!
You could also post here in the Ask a nurse section. Love and hugs, HFxx

  • Ah thank you for replying, yes I’m on Tamoxifen too - started that end of May.

maybe it is that too, I’ve been so tired as well, almost extreme tiredness again.

I didn’t think of Oedema but you’re probably right. I didn’t have any lymph nodes removed from my lower body just all under the arm.

It’s a minefield isn’t it, just as you start feeling better and returning to ‘normal’, you find yourself worrying about something else.

I'm active and back to work - I don’t exercise like I should, only because I really don’t have the energy.

I’ve gained about 10lbs, since my diagnosis so have probably just dropped into the overweight category now Rolling eyes .

Just wondering why now especially as the weathers cooled down.

I will contact the BC team, like you say you don’t like to,  as I know they’re so busy and I have done already a couple of times.

    thank you for replying Hugging

  • Hi. I had a lumpectomy and lymph nodes removed last year and have lymphoedema ever since. I have it in my legs after being bitten in the garden and developed cellulitis too.

I was referred to clinic in our local hospital and they measured my arms and the difference was minimal so I could have a sleeve but the exercises are the only thing that helps. I have compression socks for my legs which help too but definitely exercise has been the best way to relieve it for me and I hate exercising too.

    Take care. x

  • Ah thank you, was you given new exercises to do or just continued with the ones we were given after surgery?
I have been trying to exercise but like you, I really don’t enjoy it

Hope you’re ok as I know cellulitis is very painful xxx
