Low White blood cell count

Hi, I was diagnosed in June this year, I had wide local excision and radiotherapy on whole breast (15 sessions with boost), that I completed three weeks ago.  Since my diagnosis I have improved my diet considerably and increased exercise.  As a result I have lost weight and have been feeling healthier than I have in a long time.  I paid for a blood test to see if there are any deficiencies in nutrient etc that I might be able to target through my diet, but as part of this there was full blood work that identified that I had low white blood cell (WBC) count, which caught me off guard and had me a bit worried (incidentally my red blood cell count also low).  I know that chemo can effect WBC, and recognise that radiotherapy can impact WBC but I thought this would be mainly for areas that include large bones.  My treatment team haven’t mentioned low WBC nor are monitoring this so assumed this meant it wasn’t a likely outcome from treatment.  I will follow up with healthcare professional on Monday but just wondered if anyone had experience in this area.

I can’t believe that through all this, this is my first post..

Thanks

  • Hello,

No it affects the whole body. Diet can’t really support with this - just got to let your body work it’s magic!
my WBC had been low for 18 months as on and off treatment but they do improve when not on treatment.

Just means you’re prone to risk of infections. Unless, they are severely low like under 1 - I wouldn’t worry. Just try to be safe and keep away from anyone who’s unwell with a cold etc.

    xx

  • Thanks Missy219,

Yes makes sense. I will give it time, dodging unwell people may be a struggle but will do my best.

It is reassuring to know it’s likely to be treatment.
