New red and dry patch on areola

Hi I was diagnosed with BC in 2021. I had a lumpectomy, chemo x 2 rounds, radiotherapy, bone infusions and I am taking tamoxifen.

On the same breast I noticed a red, dry looking patch on my areola. I can t feel any lump but I m scared it is coming back.

I rang the breast team and they will get me a clinic appointment within 2 weeks.

Has anyone else experienced this?

  • Hi  , always important to get any change checked out so it’s good you have contacted the breast team. I had something that sounds a bit similar, on the areola on the untreated breast. In my case, the patch was brown. It turned out to be a benign skin condition (I can’t remember what it’s called) but of course I was anxious that it was something sinister.
When I noticed it, I knew I had my annual mammogram in a couple of weeks , and an appointment with my breast surgeon a few weeks after, so I decided to wait for these. At my appointment, the surgeon felt that it looked benign but arranged to see me again in a couple of months (like you, no lump). Mammogram was fine. Nothing had changed by the follow up appointment so in the end the surgeon offered to do a biopsy there and then, so that we’d know for sure. Thankfully the results came back benign, and confirmed that it was what he’d thought originally. It was of course a worrying time and the results letter took a couple of weeks, but I’d always rather know for sure. Sorry for the long ramble - just thought it might be useful to know that it took a while to establish that it was all ok! And I blame the hormone treatment (Anastrozole) for my inability to be concise!
Hopefully yours will turn out to be nothing to worry about as well. You’ve done the right thing by contacting the breast team, I’ve had a few blips in between my annual follow ups which have thankfully been ok in the end. It’s horrible though as we just want to get on with our lives. Love and hugs, HFxx

  • Oh thank you so much for that Happyfeet. Yes I just want to get on with life. I m sure it ll turn out fine. Again thank you. L

  • Hi Loraine. We all worry and think the worst I would be exactly the same but from an outsiders point of view I see this as follows:-

    1. you are currently still taking tamoxifen which blocks estrogen which feeds cancer so it is unlikely to be cancer whilst you are on that.

    2. you say you’ve had radiotherapy. This can be very damaging to the skin and you can get late effects.

I hope you get good news at your appointment, please let us know how you get on xx
