Hi everyone. Im after any advice anyone has regarding helping control hot flashes!
Mine started during chemotherapy (I'm 52 and I was told it might bring on the menopause as i was peri-menopausal before treatment), and ebb and flow in intensity.
I'm due to have my first Zoladex implant this week, and I've been told they may increase, which I'm dreading, as they are already effecting my sleep.
My cancer was er+ and pr+, so HRT not an option. I'll be starting Anastrozole and Abemaciclib in the coming weeks too, which also state hot flashes as a side effect.
Has anyone found anything that helps?
Many thanks in advance ️
Thanks, I will do. My oncologist did mention that there was a new, privately avaliable drug, but not the name. Please let me know how you get on with it x
Veozah looks interesting and could be a welcome answer to getting non hormonal relief for difficult symptoms.
I think AI treatment must be particularly hard for those who’ve suddenly had to ditch HRT and for pre-menopausal women.
My Veoza arrived yesterday so first sleep last night having taken it around 5pm and OMG no hot flashes. I was aware of being warm a couple of times but that's all. Will only believe it if it's the same tonight.
That's sounds very promising. I've everything crossed it continues x
It’s still in patent and being reviewed by NICE.
It would be good in the meantime if they were to license it for particular cases of people with difficult persistent hot flushes who can’t access Hormone treatment. Certainly the case for ER+ cancers and some people with other conditions.
Abemaciclib, which I take is currently in patent and very expensive, but on NHS prescription for aggressive ER+ HER2- primary breast cancer and for some cases of metastasised cancer.
I stumbled on a review site for abemacilib without realising it was a US one and it was apparent that it was being used in many different cases of cancer.
Veoza has been approved by the MHRA (Dec 23) and decision by NICE to be NHS approved is imminent. Hopefully. I read by May 25 which has been and gone. I haven't heard of Abemaciclib, I hope it is giving you some good relief from symptoms.
Yes, Abemaciclib is a drug given if you tick all the boxes for certain types of primary/secondary cancer. It's been described to me as 'chemo' like in how it works (and it's possible side effects). I start in a few weeks, so keeping my fingers crossed I don't have too many of them! x
Everything crossed for you. So important to advocate for ourselves, I hope it all goes well NicW. x
It comes with a fair few symptoms, many of which settle a bit, but astonishingly good record for treating aggressive primary breast cancer deemed at high risk of return. It’s a two year prescription, so short duration treatment compared with the likes of letrozole and other AIs! You take it with an oestrogen blocking drug.
Im not too bad with it and very committed to completing the course of treatment. I’m just over two thirds through.
I guess it was a bit of a non sequitur, mentioning abemaciclib, but I meant it as an example of a patented drug, which NICE has licensed in a particular way along with getting some kind of discount on price. It costs £2950 for a months prescription, but price to NHS England is less, but not made public. Patent expires in 2029..
I hope that the Veoza stays effective for you - and that some deal gets done so you don’t have to carry on shelling out before the patent expires in 2034
I didn't have hot flashes & night sweats when I was menopausal, though I developed bad VA. However, I got them after having to stop HRT & starting tamoxifen but stopping it hasn't helped. Tbh I've had so many health probs since I came off hrt that I feel 20 years older!
