Hi Everyone, this is my first post. I had a lumpectomy 2 weeks ago for DCIS. Didn't have drains put in at the time, but had to go to clinic today to have a seroma drained. Everyone I have spoken to has had theirs drained with a syringe. I had a thick needle put into mine with guidance of ultrasound, but then drained into a bowl while the doctor massaged it which was quite uncomfortable. Does anyone have any idea whay it was done this way rather than just syringed out which would have been far less sore I'm sure. I am meant to go back on Friday to be drained again, just wondered why it was done this way. Any ideas? Thanks x
I don't know the answer here for sure but I am guessing its due to there being a lot of liquid. It doesn't sound uncomfortable but trust me, it's better to gave it drained.
I left mine on the advice of the BCN and I ended up in A and E in Wales on holiday. Even though I told the BCN is was extremely swollen and painful and needed codeine she said it was normal. I ended up in A and E as the liquid had burst out of the wound and reopened the wound.
Mine was after a reincision.
I hope it resolves itself and you don't need it draining again...apparently sometimes this happens. Is it still swollen now?
Thanks for the reply, yes having looked around that is the only thing I can think of as well, the volume. Its not swollen now, (just very tender) fingers crossed it stays that way! They did say it probably would though. Crikey - that sounds awful! Hope you are ok now xx
Hi. Just wanted to share that I’ve had my seromas drained 3 times. 1st was 78ml with syringe (5th Aug). It was done this way as it could be done immediately as surgeon was there (not sure who is able to do it) and I would have had to book an ultrasound presumably.
it refilled by 19/8 (oncology appt) but got better just before my plastics appointment (28/8) but still sore, so surgeon syringed 3 different places and got 20ml. He explained that with an ultrasound they can see exactly where the fluid is, whereas with the syringe they are using a bit of guesswork where they think the fluid might be. He referred me for ultrasound as well to check.
had ultrasound yesterday (5 days later) and they found 2 pockets with 15 and 20ml. They asked if I’d like local anaesthetic and I said yes and it wasn’t any more painful than the syringe method. I have a reconstructed breast so some of it is numb though.
I am 8 weeks post surgery today and hoping that they won’t fill again or that they disperse naturally if they do. Doctor did say that tight fitting bras help as they close up the space the seroma will use to collect fluid so I tightened up my bras even at night.
all the best.
Thank you, I really hope yours is sorted now!
