Smell after mastectomy

Hello everyone, I’m looking for some advice.
I had a mastectomy and lymph node removal a week ago. I still have the dressing on, and I was told not to touch it until my two-week follow-up appointment. I’m also unable to shower, as I can’t get the area wet. I’ve been using wet wipes or a damp cloth to clean around the area instead.
Overall, I’m feeling a bit better each day, and I haven’t noticed any swelling. However, I’ve seen a small amount of discharge on one side of the dressing, under my armpit—I’m not sure if it was there before. What’s worrying me is the unpleasant smell.
I’m not sure if this is normal or if I should contact my breast care nurses. Any advice would be appreciated.

  • Hi Mirr

I think you should contact your breast care nurses, they may be able to get you in to check everything’s okay. I assume you haven’t got district nurses calling on a daily basis to check your drain?

    Best wishes

  • I remember I had this and it was fluid leaking out of the drain site. Do you still have a drain in? I just put some dressings over it and kept changing it when it felt/smelt damp.

  • No, I don’t have a district nurse coming and my cancer team is available only Monday to Friday.

  • I had my drains removed before I left hospital.

  • My breast care nurses are only available Mon - Fri also.

My drain leaked a little and they put absorbent dressings on. I did insist on seeing them just for them to check everything was okay.

If you can’t wait until tomorrow morning to contact your BCN’s, perhaps might be worth you going to A&E.

  • Ah I see, that seems very soon to have a drain out I wonder if there is still fluid collecting and that is the reason. It could indicate an infection. I would just give breast care nurses a call tomorrow morning, nothing bad is going to happen to you between now and then.

  • I decided to cal nhs24, got an appointment, they will check in me
