Lumpectomy on old ld reconstruction

Hi I've just been diagnosed with cancer in my 20 year old ld reconstruction with an implant. Ive got surgery in a few weeks to have lump and lymph nodes in axillary removed. Apparently there's a risk to the flap blood supply. Just wondered if anyone has had similar surgery? I'm trying to write a list of questions for more surgery appointment. Thanks in advance!

  • Hi, I noticed no one has responded yet, as the site is quite busy your post has dropped a few pages.  My answer will bump you back up, but in the meantime, the lovely folks at the Macmillan chat line might be able to support you with the sort of questions to ask. You can call them on 0800 808 0000. Best wishes

  • Thankyou for your reply. I'm guessing there are not many folk in my position. I wasn't expecting a  Recurrence after 21 years and in a reconstructed breast with no breast tissue. My BCN is ringing tomorrow so hopefully will answer my questions but I will definitely call the chat line if I need to thankyou

  • Hi. I’ve not had this happen to me but presumed this was very rare. I thought it was more likely to get a distant recurrence than a local one.

Is it the same type that has returned or different? Were you on any medication/when did you come off that?

I hope you are ok, I can imagine it being a shock xx

  • Hi thanks for replying. I had left mastectomy immediate reconstruction and no further treatment at the time in 2004. I was told no  radiotherapy or tamoxifen was needed. I don't know if its a new primary or a recurrence in same breast but it was non invasive DCIS in 2004 so I don't see how it could be a recurrence however that's what I've been told so far.  I'm guessing I may know more when I talk to bcn tomorrow or maybe I'll have to wait until after surgery. I'm totally confused how this has happened. I thought i may get it again but in the right breast as we have a strong family history but not in my reconstructed one!
