Hello everyone,

I wondered if any black woman here with Locs had the experience of cold capping as I wanted some incite and advice.

Thank you

  • Hi. I don’t have this type of hair but on the paxman website it does give guidance of times, outcomes etc of different hair types and I have seen this hair type on there so worth looking.

  • Thank you so much for the advice Sparkle498uk.....I will have a look on the paxman webside.

  • Hi Terri86,

I hope you're doing as well as is possible.

I asked a similar question last year before I started chemotherapy. I had very long locs. I didn't hear from anyone with similar hair type.

I didn't cold cap in the end. So I can't advise on that experience.

I did come across a Black trichologist, Lorna Jones, who at the time was offering groups and workshops around cancer treatment and hair loss, specifically around Black folks hair.

I spoke to her on the phone before I started treatment,  she was knowledgeable about cold capping.

Here's a link to her website:

  • Hi Shaka4Lyfe,

I'm doing well thank you and hope you are doing the same.

The reason why I asked is because an aunt of mine who went through breast cancer some 20 odd years ago also had Locs at the time which she had just started. She tried cold capping and stated that she benefitted from it as she did not lose much hair. I was encouraged to try it as my Locs are 15 months old and almost shoulder length.

Thank you for this information and I will have a look on the websites you recommended.

    All the best.

  • Yes, it sounds as if cold capping may be a viable option for you. Wishing you positive outcome with whichever direction you choose:)

  • Hi I’m not black and I don’t have locs but I do have some experience with cold cap that may be useful? . My advice would be to make sure that the cap is fitted really well and there is good contact over your whole head. I didn’t have this and my hair came out in the areas where the contact was poor. I ended up shaving my head because of this. My understanding also is that if you have stronger hair the cold cap is more likely to be successful. Crossing every finger that it works for you x

  • Hello KarenC24,

I hope that you are coping well.

Thank you for your advice with regards to my question. I hope it does work and if it doesn't I'll just shave it off. I know it's only hair but the fact that I've I had to go through a mascectomy with diep flap reconstruction as well as some lymph node removal( 5 was removed, however only 1 had cancer cells) therefore was offered LYMPHA. I wanted to attempt holding onto something in order to feel like I'm controlling something.

  • Hi Terri,

Good morning, I haven't got any experience with cold caps but I saw these resources on the Macmillan site that might have some useful information, the links are almost at the bottom of the page. Sounds like you've been through a lot that was out of your hands and now wanting to feel in control is so relatable. I hope the LYMPHA works, and the cold cap too, sending wishes for the best outcome :)
