Oncotype test failed due to "insufficient sample material"

Her2 -ve/ER+ve people : did anybody fail to get a score from the Oncotype DX test because there was "insufficient sample material" sent to the USA for the lab to do the test on? What happened next? Did they redo the test on a bigger sample or were you sent off for chemo anyway? Having waited weeks for these test results I am gutted at the news that it's not given any further info to make the chemo yes/no decision on.   Having had a Grade 3 IBC tumour I expect now that the Oncologist will recommend chemo come what may, but I will always wonder whether my oncotype would have indicated that in my case chemo was not actually of any, or very minimal, additional benefit in preventing reoccurrence.

  • Hi

This must be horrible for you.

I was fortunate that they sent the sample to the US (of all places. Why couldn't they do it in the UK) and waiting over 4 weeks to get a result. I  did get a little annoyed and frustrated at my Oncologist and care team- who was absolutely brilliant and had the plan ready for my 1st appointment with her.

The moment she said "chemo", I felt sick and panicky. I was also told that I may not need radiotherapy but ended up having 10 zaps of radiation.

It was also being told that before surgery, it was a Grade 2 and "probably not as serious for my age and size and the fact it was caught so early". Then after surgery it was Grade 3 HER2 +. I broke as it was more serious than they let on at the "testing" appointments.

All the questions you have are perfectly normal and I hope you get the answers you need from your oncology team

    Take care
